Even in today's market there are still some really good fixer-uppers out there.  I saw one recently that would make an excellent project for the hands-on home buyer who has to have an ocean view.

The quiet town of Haliimaile, on the slopes of Haleakala, is basically a "company town".  Maui Land and Pineapple Company (MLP) base their pineapple farming operations here.  Back when the sugar and pineapple plantations ruled this island, the companies would build worker housing, known as camps.  Haliimaile has a lot of those camp homes still standing, though most have seen better days.  When a Haliimaile house comes on the market, it is usually a fixer upper.

This home pictured here was built in the 70's and looks like it hasn't been upgraded since.  What's interesting is the views, which are incredible!  As this 3 bedroom home is located at the bottom edge of the "camp" there are no other homes blocking the view towards the ocean.  You can see miles and miles of sugar cane fields, as well as the central valley where the main cities of Kahului and Wailuku are.  This is a million dollar view, and they are only asking $525,000.

Haliimaile is considered part of Makawao at this time, without it's own post office and zip code.  Makawao proper is only a few miles away, a litte higher up on the mountain.  There are plans to develop a new subdivision and town center in Haliimaile, which will make the sleepy town come alive with hundreds of more homes and a commercial center.  I'll try to update you as things progress, but don't hold your breath just yet.
