How you compensate your financial adviser can be as important as what you pay. In Equifax Personal Finance Blog's installment today, financial adviser Roger Wohlner explains the different types of compensation and how it may affect you.

How do you compensate your financial adviser?

The three main forms of compensation for financial advisers are:

  • Commissions: Adviser is compensated when they sell you a financial product.
  • Fee-based: Adviser and client might create a financial plan with a set fee.
  • Fee-only: Adviser compensated directly by client fees.

Knowing which form of compensation you're paying your adviser is crucial. For example, commission-based financial advisers can be paid by financial product providers in addition to you which creates a conflict of interest for what advice you recieve.
