Isn't technology great? cell phone

I remember my first Motorola cell (car) phone. It was about the size of 2 bricks stacked on top of each other and came in a stylish black leather carrying case. The handset was attached to the base with one of those curly phone cords. Remember those?

I remember when only doctors and crucial personnel carried pages. They always acted so cool and important when their "beepers" went off. (They probably had someone at home paging them every 5 minutes while they were out in public just to make them feel important).

Boy how things have changed. I never dreamed I would become so dependent on a small piece of plastic with a screen and keyboard. My Blackberry is my lifeline. With emails, text messages, camera, web browsing, Facebook, and QR code scanning software, I have everything I could ever need. Oh, and did I mention you can actually make and receive phone calls on it too?

With an unlimited data and text plan, I never have to worry about how many bits of information I receive. There are days, however, when I'm sure I see smoke coming from my phone from overload (or maybe that's just me).

Most of the time this convenience is great.

But, what about those times when we need to take a break from the outside world. I can't get through a meal without my phone vibrating for some reason or other. I wonder if we stop to consider how invasive and draining the constant flurry of messages can be.

We don't seem to savor and process our thoughts anymore. Instead, we pick up the phone and text each other with every insignificant thought that enters the grey matter of our brains. Don't get me wrong, I know I am a frequent offender of this, but I would love to discipline myself to stop and think twice before I send the next "important" message and consider whether or not I am disturbing the recipient in any way.

If this post seems a little scattered it's because while writing it I have been emailed 5 times and texted 6. All of which sends my phone into STUN mod; bzzzz.

Hi, Belinda. How, I remember my first mobile phone too. It was big and gray. I think I still have it some where as a reminder of those good old days. I hated those pagers, since I was always "on call" for the laboratory, being the senior non-com in charge of all those lab techs.

You forgot to mention that you can even see movies on some of those smartphones now. Like, you I feel lost without mine today.

Ignore it when need be Belinda.  I make a point of returning calls every hour or so (unless it's really critical).  I learned a long time ago to stay focused on what I'm working on in the present - and not get distracted by phone calls, texts whatever.  It takes much more time to re-focus back on what I was working on then if I just complete it and then respond as needed. Most clients respect normal hours - there's only one or two that seem to think late or very early calls are appropiate.  I had a conversation with one just the other day. He waits to call me at 8:30 or 9:00 pm - and then wonders why he doens't get a call back till the next day. Duh......dude to your clients call you that late. NO?  Duh!!!  We do have a live outside of real estate!!!  And is not - get one!!!

I know what you mean Belinda.  Sometimes I am easily distracted by my phone buzzing all the time.  But every once in a while I get away, and sometimes to places where my phone doesn't even work.  That way I know I will not be distracted.

Yes, we are too accessible...I can't stand when I call someone back and they wonder where I was: ummm, the restroom!

Put down the phone.  Seriously.  Step away.  I dare you to go to the grocery store without it.  Leave it on silent mode all day.  I do.  I can't stand the sounds that thing makes.  I promise the world won't end.  What I did two years ago was set business hours.  9-6.  If you call me, text me or email after that, you are not getting an answer.  And if I'm going to grocery store on Saturday with my hubby, he takes his phone (not a Realtor) and I leave mine at home.  He says, "What if someone calls?"  Well...they can leave a message.

Just because we have Blackberries and Droids and iPhones doesn't mean we can't be ALONE sometimes, or inaccessible.  We need it for our sanity.

I hope I never get to the point where technology runs my life but I think that's where the world is headed.

Belinda, If not for this "insignificant thought that enters the grey matter of our brains", I wouldn't have anything to say or write about.  I like Chris' comment and that she FEATURED it in BARTENDER, MAKE IT A DOUBLE.  Sometimes, we need a double.  Happy Cinco De Mayo and best wishes always.

Kathy,  It is hard to just step away at times.  I am guilty as well.

Jerry,  I wouldn't dream of watching a movie on my phone.  My eyes would go crossed.

Eric,  You are still young (you never heard of Herman's Hermits).  You can take charge of the technology world and not let it ruin your life.

Hi Belinda, we are way too accessible these days.  We can be contacted and reached at all times.  Take time for you and turn everything off.

Belinda, our phones CAN rule our lives, but when we have clients, they have to be put away until finished.    I have two email accounts so I don't get AR updates, FB updates and builder/lender/title emails during the day until I get home.    It works better for me, and allows me to pay more attention without the phone buzzing so often!

We are way too accessible these days, but we bring it on ourselves, don't we?  LOL  Besides, folks have become accustomed to "instant gratification" and expect it from us sometimes, too.   It's up to us to set some limits, which is not easy to do.

Belinda, I often think how accessible we have made ourselves and how we are always "on" -- rarely do we really take a weekend or evening off.  But I think we've somehow done it to ourselves.  When I'm with family and unless I am expecting something urgent, I let it "go to voicemail."  Just like the good old days when you would get back to the office and check messages -- seems like long, long ago in a far off land.
