Town of Ramapo Residents - Do You Know How Tax Assessments Work and How to Grieve Them?
Property values in Rockland County have been going down, but property taxes in most cases, have been going up. The tax structure is based on the assessed value of your home and for those that feel that they are being overassessed there is a grievance process via which you can fight your assessment.
The deadline for filing greivances, May 24, is quickly approaching. The Town of Ramapo in an effort to help residents understand the grievance process has scheculed an evening where Town Assessor Scott Shedler will explain the assessment process. If you feel you are being taxed unfairly, you won't want to miss this.
Scott will be at the Suffern Free Library, 210 Lafayette Ave in Suffern NY, this Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 6:45 to explain the process. Come prepared. Check the the value of your property online by visiting www.ramapo.org and checking under "property owners toolkit".
Here you can compare the town's assessed value of your home with nearby properties. The website provides information about estimating the market value of your property, the relationship between your taxes and your assessment, and also how to go about challenging the assessment.
You'll then have enough information to decide whether to challenge the assessment during the grievance period which ends May 24.
The town's hotline for help with assessment information is 845-918-2032.
