I sit in my condo in Door County and had a couple of beers on my first day of vacation.  My brother, Dr. Matthew Bettag and I were having a great conversation when he said that "everyone is a snob...it's just a matter of with what!"  He elaborated that he is a snob about photography, coffee and cigars.  In other words, even if a patient gives him a great cigar, it has to meet one of his self inflicted criteria.  It's not that he's ungrateful...quite the contrary, but he's smoked so many of these over the weekends over the years that his tastes are pretty much in place.

I'm the same way with beer...First let me say, that I'm not a drinker, but on the weekends I love 1 or 2 on Friday and/or Saturday.  No more and not any other day.  I love beer, but I don't like not being able to click on all 6 cylinders the next day.  So I have 1 or two prior to dinner and just water from dinner on.  Then I go on a nice long run the next day.  Whew...have disclosed my drinking conscience....there's a few more things.

I used to brew my own beer during law school.  I tried every beer under the sun.  In law school, there was a bar that if you drank all 100 different beers, you got some huge german stein.  I think I drank the list 4 times!!!!  100 beers 4 times!  I sure tasted a lot of beers....Now, I've refined my taste.  Here's one of my snobby hobbies...

I'll taste any beer, the different the better, but as a general rule, here's my poison for the last 2 years.

1)   Fosters - There's a rule here.  This is the only beer that tastes better in a can than a bottle....the bottles suck.  The cans rock.  So does Foster's on tap.  Must be served in a mug that's been frozen (snob);

2)  Blue Moon - I'm not a sissy...really....but this needs to be served on tap and with extra orange....this goes down like frickin candy.  I love wine, gin and so many other things....but I know that this is not the manly beers that I've been drinking during my schooling and during my beer education, but I can't help it.

3)  Modelo Especial -  Gotta be honest with you....I'm "bi" here...I'll go either way.  Even with or without lime.  Whatever.

Let me conclude by saying that I'll try anything....I love wine, but I can't help being a beer snob

Hi Larry,  I do not drink much but I love potato salad--and I am not a snob about it--I will eat any potato salad and love it!

I'm a beer snob, also.  I'm a Negro Modelo fan, Dos Equus, and Bud Light fan.

I haven't been to the aforementioned bar but I'm sure I polished off that list.

We have an office a couple of doors from The Brickskeller, a Washington, DC restaurant with a gazillion kinds of beer - literally!  Lately, my favorite has been Caliber, which is Guinness' non-alcoholic beer.  It tastes great, and I can have it for lunch without crashing mid-afternoon.

I would never have expected Larry Bettag to be blogging about beer. You are too funny.  I like beer and I also drank my fair share in college, but I am more of a wine snob.  Of course, I live 1/2 hour from wine country, so I kind of have to be.

Thank you for the full disclosure on your drinking habits.  I am not so brave!
