Cinco de Mayo in Phoenix

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo, a day recognized in the United States to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride.

Cinco De Mayo is commonly thought of as Mexico's Independence Day, but that is not true. Cinco De Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's underdog victory against France in 1862. May 5th is shockingly not widely celebrated in Mexico outside of Puebla, where the battle took place, leaving most of the celebrating taking place in the United States.

The battle is significant because of Mexico's unlikely chance to win the battle against France, and because, since then, no country in the Americas has been attacked by a European military.

Due to our close proximity to the Mexican border, Cinco De Mayo is widely celebrated in Phoenix. Here are a few things going on:

Hollyhock Branch Library in Surprise: At 3pm, this valley library will be hosting an educational event to learn about Mexican culture, current events, and people. The event is free. Call 602.652.3000 for more information.

Arriba Mexican Grill: with 2 locations in Scottsdale, one in Phoenix, and one in Glendale, Arriba is celebrating Cinco De Mayo with inexpensive food and drink specials, and various forms of music including a DJ, live music, a mariachi band, and giveaways. Check out Arriba Mexican Grill website for specific location information.

Dos Gringos: in Scottsdale and Tempe, Dos Gringos is featuring food and drink specials, live bands, and games such as a pong tournament and bean bag toss tournament. The Scottsdale location will also host a bike race in downtown Scottsdale at 5am Sunday. Check out Dos Gringos' website for more detail.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! (Happy Cinco De Mayo!)

Anna, thanks for that bit of history and until this year I never knew that Cinqo d'mayo was a holiday, let alone why it was celebrated.  All the things you learn by playing in the rain.....

Anna,  Cinci De Mayo is celebrated heavily here in Denver as well.  My husband and I went out for dinner after golf today.  I suggested Mexican and he said "no way, it will be packed".  We went to Texas Roadhouse instead (one of his favorites)  and it was crazy busy.  Who would have thought?
