The other night (while at home), I was changing a few photos on one of our listings. My 6 year old son said, "I helped you take pictures at that house". I started to object, and then remembered that he went with me to the home a couple months ago.

I smiled, and then realized once again that I work TOO MUCH. Am I missing my children growing up? I try to take each of my older sons to work on separate days each week; it is not quality time.

goWe purchased a motor home earlier this year, but sold it after using it for only two days. My self-imposed work schedule did not allow us to go again. Now, my two older sons often talk about those two days; "they miss the R.V." and "want a new one".

Though it is not January, It is time for a resolution! I will take more time off to spend with my children. We will go on a family vacation before Christmas!

I do not want to look back in twenty years and say, "it was just yesterday that they were babies, where did the time go"...I was a successful Broker.

Nathan, I'm so glad you realized that you were missing time with your family.  So many people don't even recognize that until it's too late.   Take that vacation - have someone cover your business while you're gone.  Turn the phone off while your gone.  Make memories with your children.  You and your family will thank you years later.

Family is very important and you do need to take time for them.  Taking your sons to work with you I believe is a good thing, it shows them what you have to do to bring a buck home and they will remember those times together at work.  But you do need that time away from work with them as well.  Ah the balance it is so hard to acheive.

Great response. Kids are so important. And they do grow up fast. My son is now a 24 year old in law enforcement but we shared lots of time as he grew up. He just called me the other day on his day to chat for about a halh hour...for no reason. enjoy the kids!

i completely identify with you, Im managing 25 agents and trying to sell myself, its slow and I cant afford any time off, Im determined not to miss my family and 5 children.  Also, I the sole earner which makes it even more interesting...Im not complaining Im just living the reality of the times,  I feel that my heart is in the right place and my intentions are good.  I was told that the most important part of being a parent is wanting to be a good parent.  You sound like a great parent.  sincerly,  Kirk Mulhearn Long Beach, CA.

My dad has always said nothing marks your time or age like children. He worked odd and incredible hours when I was younger, and I know he missed a lot of my childhood. There may not be any "making it up," but we have a stronger bond now than either of us could have probably hoped for.

Nathan, I have two boys at home, and I share your angst.  It can be so difficult to sacrifice the male-programmed mantra of providing for the sake of actually seeing those for whom you toil.  I have also made it my highest priority to spend as much time with the family as humanly possible.  Deals will come and go, but childhood only goes.  Don't miss it.

Save yourself the headache and have all the fun of an RV, go rent one for you and your family and leave town soon. It sounds like your family is begging you for it and you should disappoint them.

Nathan,

A great reminder for everyone! They said time=money. I believe time is more precious than money. Our busy lives sometimes gets in the way of our personal lives. It is great that you realized this and begin to make the change now in your life. We all need to do that. It looks like you are a very dedicated dad. Thanks for the comment on my blog!
