Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated primarily in the state capital city of Puebla and in the United States of America. In the USA it is a celebration of Mexican heritage, culture, music, food, customs and pride. It commemorates the Mexican defeat over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. About 4000 Mexican soldiers were outnumbered by the well-trained & well-equipped French army of 8,000.  The French had not been defeated for almost 50 years so it was quite a shock to all when they lost the battle.  Mexicans living in Columbia, California during the American Civil War are credited with being the first to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the United States. It has been celebrated ever since in the USA.  Most people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico's Independence Day is September 16th.

So today, much like on St Patrick's Day when everyone is Irish, on Cinco de Mayo everyone celebrates like they are Mexican. I will be celebrating on the rooftop of the Don Cesar Hotel on St Pete Beach watching the sun set on the Gulf of Mexico.   VIVA MEXICO!!
