What is your FEAR? I think most people have at least one....
- My husband, Michael, has this thing with SHARKS (even Jaws)
- My cousin thing, John, its SNAKES
- My daughter, Kayla, its FROGS
... mine is HEIGHTS .... and I was challenged last weekend big time!
We went camping at Rickett's Glenn PA Park Friday thru Sunday.
Saturday morning we woke up, had a yummy Breakfast Burrito Breakfast, and off we set - let's go HIKE and see the Waterfalls this park boasts!
I thought we'd have some steep 'stair' type things to climb, and I thought there would be rails, guards, protectors of many kinds despite the advanced rating and warnings throughout signs & literature.
But never did I picture......
ROCKY stairs with MASSIVE drop-offs... Yikes!
First challenge of MANY that day, on our 5-hour long hike down and up, is pictured to the left.
My cousin, Beth and I decided to skip the hike and wait at the top. I thought Morgan, my 4-yr old, would be turning around with my husband in 30 minutes and we'd see them soon. We sat and talked to each other, walked around a bit. Watched as 80-yr old couples went quickly down as professionals. We watched as people carried their dogs down.
Then our Encourager, who we wanted to see to thank, but didn't.... she approached with her two Golden Retrievers, and looked at us and just knew....
"You can do it." she said. "I was just like you last year, when it gets hard, just turn around like this"
Beth and I looked at each other. Can we? Should we? I almost lost my Breakfast Burrito watching Morgan go down - I actually couldn't watch.
We talked a little bit more, there were at least 20 waterfalls we would not get to see if we didn't do this. Maybe this set of 'stairs' was the worse one (it wasn't). Let's try.
I took my Walking Stick I had grabbed, with both hands and muscles tense like you just can't imagine and took one step at a time. I caught myself with locked knees a couple of times.
Beth and I discovered that we had different fears of heights. I didn't like going down, I'm top heavy - and I picture flipping over very easily. Beth's fear is going up - she's afraid of falling backwards. Perfect! Beth goes in front.
We did it!!!! We even caught up to the group at the first large waterfall (see picture).
I conquered my fear - and it felt really good! I was so happy to see God's Beautiful Creations everywhere. The rock formations, the waterfalls, the trees, all amazing!
That's what the blog is about - conquering your fear - whatever that may be.... so I won't talk about the way up, being the physical part for me after using so many muscles on the way down - with stress. It was a hard climb for me. Morgan (the 4 yr old) was quite the trooper, and didn't whine a bit - shock! I think I would do it again. My constant "don't look down, don't look down, I can do this" was heard throughout, I'm sure :)
Who arranged this camping vacation anyway??? I DID !!
YOU CAN DO IT................... YOU CAN DO IT ............... TRY !!!
