I was thinking last night, as I was inundated with advertising messages of various companies, that NONE of them really stick out as having PURPOSE. Yeah, the BMW ad makes me feel like I wanna go drive in the winding, tree lined roads of who knows where and the Wranglers ad makes me think I should go out and have some fun times with friends...and I won't even get into the various commericals that come on for feminine medical issues, male failure and various birth controls which are embarassing for me to sit in the company of my four year old and my fifteen year old daughters. It all seems pretty selfish to me..it's all about ME as opposed to US, as in the U.S.A! But do any of the commercials even have MEANING anymore? I remember years ago, when Sam Walton was alive, the Wal-Mart commercials were about BUYING AMERICAN and BRINGING IT HOME TO AMERICA...that's long since gone away and there certainly is no sense of patriotism assoicated with buying anything from Wal-Mart anymore since most of their goods come from CHINA. Before my time, but Rosie The Riveter was an icon of Americanism. Does anyone in the advertising industry have that Patriotic Icon anymore?
I agree 100%. In my opinion, if the companies did promote the USA somehow, their sales would skyrocket. It doesn't make sense to me why they don't. Even if the product is made overseas, they could still promote it patriotically. The trend away from saying anything about "America" from the big Madison Ave. ad companies and others is a huge financial mistake.
Great thoughtful post, Ron.
I think especially now a company that advertises with "Made in the USA" would be well recieved...American made, and American jobs.
The Chrysler - Detroit car commercial was pretty good. I love how it ended "Imported from Detroit"
I think we all love America. I agree we need to show it more often and in more ways.
Ron - I shop for "Made in America" products. This type of advertisement catches my attention.
