Happy Mother's Day!
I love mom

Mother's Day

Today is a day to celebrate our mothers. I thought the most appropriate way to celebrate Mother's Day on ActiveRain would be to share our fondest memory of how our mothers made our houses into a home.

Here is my story about my mother, Linda Silverstone, who passed away a little over 11 years ago and is still very much a major influence on my life:

My mother loved flowers, especially tulips.  My childhood home in Woodbridge, Connecticut was frequently filled with flowers.  My mom's love for tulips extended to her home decorating - when our kitchen was remodeled, our wallpaper was a pattern of blue tulips.  I don't think this would be considered a popular choice today, but it fit her style back then.  I still have a few plates and items with tulp patterns, and each time I see them them, I think of her.  I love you, mom!

Scott, I just love your post. My father just passed away in March and I have been spending a lot of time with my mom. The other day I realized we both wait for someone to open the door for us. My husband does it for me and my dad did it for her. We laughed  at it and agreed to take turns. :) Losing a parent is never easy as I have recently learned. It is so nice to see how you have honored your mom by remembering her in the little things.

Margaret - Thanks for sharing the tulips!

Elisa - Sorry for your recent loss.  I'm sure this will be a difficult mother's day for your family.

Scott - what a wonderful idea for a blog. Not that dad's don't deserve credit too, but I think most of us could identify a few ways our mom made a house into a "home".

For me, it was when mom would paint one wall all white (in the family room or the den - or in the kitchen in one house) and we would use the wall as an outlet for our creativity.  We would only be allowed to use black markers and she would usually christen the wall by sketching a tree (her signature artwork) and then we would each draw a picture, or post a quote - and sign our names.  And then anyone coming over to visit would also be asked to sign the wall. Some of the artwork and quotes were legendary - and I'm really wishing we had been smart enough to take pictures of them all...

Thank you for encouraging us to share - and hoping the mom's in your life have a wonderful mother's day!

My sister and I grew up in South and North Carolina.  My father always had speed boats and I can remember very EARLY Sunday mornings with our mother frying chicken for our picnic on our boat(s).
