TEXTING ETIQUETTE, WOW, I did not know it was in writing.....

TEXTING ETIQUETTE, WOW, I did not know it was in writing..... OK, so call me old and call me little behind the times.  I can not believe I am saying this, I try to keep up with everything, stay hip an in the times....  So the other day I was talking onTexting the phone and the result was she will text me to let me know if she needed a ride to BOLD Class.  Well, she did text me and a few days later I saw her and she said "YOU DID NOT RESPOND"  I said, "well you said that you would text me what you wanted to do and it was a follow up from a phone call, why would I need to respond". I thought it was over..... Well, in the conversation she said I had to respond?  So, I pulled out  my iPad and did a search for Texting Etiquette and WOW, there it was...... There really is a site like that.....
So to answer my question, YES I should have sent a response to her.

Here are a few Do's:

  • Do remember that common courtesy still rules. For example, composing an SMS (or text message) while you're in a face-to-face conversation with someone is just as rude as taking a voice call.
  • Do remember that texting is informal. It shouldn't be used for formal invitations or to dump your girlfriend or boyfriend. The casualness of texting diminishes the strength and meaning of the message.
  • Do keep it light and simple. No one wants to read long messages on a text device. No one wants to have an entire conversation with you by texting when you could just call him or her instead. The medium is meant for short and sweet, so keep it that way. Verizon states that anything over 160 characters should be an email or a call.

Here are a few Don'ts:

  • Don’t deliver bad or sad news by text. Texts should be short and sweet. You shouldn’t use text messaging when informing someone of sad news, business matters, or urgent meetings, unless it’s to set up a phone call on the subject.
  • Don’t expect your text to get to your recipient the minute you hit “send”. Remember that as with email, you can’t know for sure when the recipient is going to read his or her message. If the message is time sensitive you should call.
  • Don’t have three espressos and then start sending messages like crazy. Think before you hit send. Not only will you possibly send the wrong feeling to someone — you may send it to the wrong person, altogether!

SO, from now on I will respond to EVERY TEXT Message, Will You?   TEXTING ETIQUETTE, WOW, I did not know it was in writing.....

It's sad that we have to come to this but you're right, most people dont have basic common sense.

I didn't realize it was in writing either! Bottom line everyone needs to practice common curtesy which seems to be in short supply at times in today's world!

I havent joined the texting world yet. The clients in my area don't know how and it embarrases them that everyone assumes they do.

There are certainly times you need to text back even when you don't feel it is necessary. It is like closing out on a CB with a 10$

Ken,

I love to text. I am of the "older" generation but I can talk, I mean really talk so texting helps my time management.

My clients like me to text them. I wonder if they really want to tell me I talk to much! LOL

I especially like the part about not sending bad news! You never know how someone will interpret a text, make sure to tell people anything important in person or over the phone, that way they can hear your tone of voice.

When in Rome you must do what the Romans do!  Drives me nuts to keep up with who communicates how and why :)

ROTFL

Some of my clients text and some don't.  I'm with Renee about trying to keep up with who wants what as far as communication goes.
