Let's Talk About Predecessor Energy: A Feng Shui Post from Feng Shui Long Island

By
Home Stager with Feng Shui Manhattan Long Island #888

For years I have been reading a wonderful website called http://www.hauntedrealestate.com/for further information on the way "hauntings" have been handled by others. I have had to drag myself off that site and little did I know that one day I would be graced to be able to "meet" the person who had put it together, Mary Pope-Handy!  Her recent post A Halloween and Ghostly MeMe (thanks Mike Mueller!)  inspired this post.  In my profession it is NOT unusual to be called to a client's new home or for a pre-purchase "inspection" to see if the home suits them from a Feng Shui Perspective. As a matter of fact, this probably accounts for at least 30% of my calls.  This is done, most of the time without a Realtors knowledge because, quite frankly, hauntings and Predecessor Energy concern my clients; they oftentimes want to see if I pick up on anything unusual or because they have moved into a new home or office and just feel "things aren't RIGHT."  Sometimes it is a financial loss, sometimes my client's notice health issues throughout the family and yes, sometimes they SEE, FEEL or HEAR things.

Having studied Parapsychology years ago and further studies in Energy which finally led me to Feng Shui, we were made aware of what is called "Predecessor Energy."  This is Energy either on the land itself from past incidents or in a home where perhaps some unusual and not very happy occurrences took place.  Energy, we were taught, leaves it's own "imprint" in a space.  And this Energy often lingers behind, causing havoc in many client's lives.  Some are just uncomfortable and want their space to be THEIR OWN, something Feng Shui helps to ensure this.

I find it sad that only a few clients will mention our consultation to Realtors as they don't want to be thought "crazy."  I can assure you, they're not.  There's simply too many of them and they are all warm hearted, spiritual people.  For example, have you ever noticed a particular home that is on the market every few years?  Oftentimes if you look into the reason a buyer is selling it may be because of a divorce.  Negative energy is left behind and new occupants now are in a space where there has been much grief, sadness, financial loss, etc.  Compare it to the energy of a home that is being sold because the owners have made more money and are moving UP, buying a bigger home; they are leaving under happy circumstances.

Feng Shui Long Island Haunted House

This is not to say they all are afraid, as a matter of fact, most aren't at all, yet they are uncomfortable.  In Mary's experiences in her MeMe,  I too have found that Electrical Energy happens in these homes quite often.  Sometimes in addition or separately there are unusual noises they can't account for.  Sometimes there are sightings and many times all the members of the family will experience it.  I know on Long Island and all of New York City and many other places there was much fighting and many unfortunate deaths over this beautiful land.

Do I believe Feng Shui Blessings help to dispel negative Energy?  After many, many years of being called for these types of things, I absolutely do.  So do my clients who are very grateful.  Do I know exactly WHY they work?  Honestly, I don't; the blessings provided us have been passed down from Mentor to Student for thousands of years.  In checking back with my clients, they are thrilled that these "odd" occurrences in their homes have stopped.  So am I!  On occasion, it is temporary and will return but most often, it seems to just STOP.  No, Feng Shui consultants are NOT "Ghostbusters."  But oftentimes, we CAN help.

Feng Shui Long Island Real Estate

I would love for my clients to be able to share their concerns with their Real Estate Agents without fear.  I know many, such as Mary and Jo-Anne Smith are open to these things and I wish as time goes on, all our mutual clients can express them freely to anyone and don't need to keep these things they are experiencing in HIDING.  Next time you go to visit a house, instead of just looking at it to evaluate what needs work, assessing what the price should be and all the other work you have to do, take a moment to just FEEL the space.....You never know if YOU just might pick something up!

Parapsychology has always been extremely intriguing to me.  After college, I was thinking I may go that route.  By the way, not sure why it took me so long....but I am a subscriber!

That you to the secret moderator(s) for a feature, I appreciate it.

Deborah, Thank you for your response.  Most people feel very uncomfortable talking about it still but I do think that if you pay attention, many Realtors already do (and will) develop a feeling in a home.  Most of the time I find my clients don't share this with anyone, even friends and family because of what they might think of them.  I think it's a shame.

Laurie, I know you get "spooked" just thinking about it.  I'm sure your home is just fine, sweet dreams.

Katerina,Thank you for sharing, it would make a wonderful post and I hope you'll consider it!  I have been working with some realtors for years now using Feng Shui (and redesign---before it was called redesign) to help a home sell and it must be working, they always call back.  Here, still, however, it is kept quiet for the most part.  These Real Estate agents do not speak of it.  My clients are still worried that people will think there is something wrong with them for either believing in Feng Shui or talking about what may be going on in their homes or offices---yet it happens.  I am thrilled that you called a consultant and your home completely supports you and Nestor and what you want to create!

Candy, Many people aren't aware this is also something we do in Feng Shui.  One of my clients had never heard of it but was so bothered by the occurances in his home he consulted a therapist, thinking there might be something wrong with himself!  After an evaluation the therapist told him to contact a Feng Shui Consultant.  And it definitely helped him, he says he is a new person as all that energy has stopped.

Joan, Many people do want to see if a home will support them in life and that is a reason they call as well.  Oftentimes we can show them how it will and direct energy with small changes.  I truly believe that your OWN energy is the strongest factor in purchasing a home and if prospective clients love it but have concerns, they should call.  I don't believe some Realtors still are as open as you to hear what their clients have to say on this topic--the clients are fearful of talking and I do understand why.

Jo, I know you have experienced these things and understand them (firsthand).  Even on this post it seems some people feel reluctant to discuss it.  However, from the interest and use of Feng Shui ten years ago to now it's use has grown tremendously by all types of culture; I can't imagine what the next ten years will bring and it would be one more thing that would give Realtors an edge, just a knowledge of it.

Betty, Thank you for your comment, I think many people are unaware we deal with these issues.  A good book to start (in my opinion although there are many good ones out there) is Feng Shui Made Easy by William Spear.

Cynthia, Mary's MeMe was so interesting but then so is her other website!  I couldn't have imagined that I had read it for so long and someday would know the person who owned it.  It's what made me think about doing this post.  Thank you for your comment.

Matthew, A home should support you and your wife in all areas.  It might not be a bad idea to call in a qualified consultant (who is Certified) when you're looking to buy again.  I have had a NYS policeman, lawyers, doctors and large corporations call me and many times it's for these things we don't talk about often.  But as you can see, some people do not accept it still.  Thank you for stopping in and commenting.

Christina, Thank you for your comment.  I've seen more issues in homes where the former occupants have left under "bad" circumstances then when they've left for good reasons, such as a move up or to be closer to children.  There is an "imprint" left behind, I believe, in the energy which affects the new homeowners.

Mary, This wasn't my MeMe, just a takeoff from your wonderful post!  I thank you for bringing it up and agree that people do not speak of it out of fear that they won't be believed or will be thought of as "crazy."  You and I know this is not the case and I feel it's a shame they can't speak openly about these concerns.  Feng Shui consultants are called in "quietly" -- some by Realtors I have been working with for years and some by people considering a home or just before they move in.  Thank you for your amazing MeMe, your wonderful site and the knowledge you have shared with me.

Jason, Thank you for the comment, I am a subcriber to you as well.  Parapsychology was facinating although I had started off with a year or so of psycology and switched.  I never once thought my deep interest in it would have anything in any way to do with a career!

Nice post Carole, I didn't know that Feng Shui addressed this issue but it is an issue I have thought lots about.  Thanks.

From my experience, I have learned that you need to have some pretty good knowledge about Feng Shui if your prospective client is oriental.  There are many homes the oriental will simply not even consider.  Carole keeps us up to speed on these.  Personally, I remember learning the hard way that a staircase decending towards the front door was out of the questions, as well as a being able to see from the front door straight out through the back door.

Carole--Some people are more perseptive to this energy than others...but it is always there. I showed some clients a home that we felt had a weird vibe in but it was a great deal. My clients were considering writing anoffer and we visited the home several times but something was wrong and we couldn't put our finger on it. When we contacted the agent it was disclosed that a family had been murdered in the home several years ago and it had just come out of probate....disclosure for this stigma is required in MN. Mr Buyer didn't care but Mrs Buyer was upset. They found another home without the stigma (and weird energy). Congrats on the feature! :)

Carolyn, Thank you for your question.  Corner homes MAY present different types of issues from a Feng Shui Perspective such as street energy, poisen arrows (as Katerina mentioned) and surrounding structures.  There is no one generalization about this because each home is different and these are all addressed individually during a consultation.  It is a topic into itself and I wish I could be more specific.

Robert, I agree, many places people from other cultures won't consider includes these issues (builders take note :).  Your front door is very auspicious according to Feng Shui, if it leads directly upstairs the energy does not flow through the home, it "sweeps" energy upstairs.  The front and back doors in alignment make them feel as though the energy flow comes in through the front and goes right back out again.  I happen to believe in combining Western Methods that are neither expensive or difficult to correct these issues and have seen homeowners do very well in these homes; however, some consultants would advise against it.

Teri, Thank you!  I'm glad they have disclosure laws because I would want to know.  It may not change my opinion on buying the home but would tell me how to address it.  Not long ago a large company I worked with relocated into a funeral home.  When I first went to evaluate it, it was filled with sadness but we saw potential and completely changed the energy.  I'm happy to say their business thriving!

Darryl, It seems many people weren't aware this is something we work with, I'm glad I did the post.  Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Congratulations on the feature, Carole!  I am loathe to admit it, but all I know about Feng Shui has been what I've learned in your posts.  I remember, before I was an agent, looking at homes to buy for myself and one of them gave me the creeps as soon as I crossed the threshold.  I never got past the front door because of the negative energy!

Cynthia, You are so sweet, thanks so much for the congrats!

Lisa, That is your Intuition kicking in.  There are definitely things you can feel.  The Travel Channel recently did a show on the top 10 most haunted places and a graveyard in New Orleans was on there.  (Sorry, I just saw the show and it's still fresh in my mind :)

Carole: Excellent post. I feel this is a very important topic, having once lived in a home with "soiled energy" from the prior owner. The consequences were horrid. It would be good if you could do an article here about some"cleansing" techniques (sound, smudging, prayer, etc.) used in your practice.

Most people never think along the lines of "energy" or Feng Shui.  All of this is intriguing and some TV programs have helped call attention to the "something out there."

Thanks taking the time to read and comment on my post: The Way to Get There is to Know You've Already Arrived

I enjoyed your post Carole, sometimes I've picked up on something in a Home we are showing (gut feelings)

- and wonder if the people living there feel the same things?

Thanks for sharing this

I prefer the Penn and Teller approach to Feng Shui. If you can objectively watch their documented research on the subject, you will be able to at least see how some people feel on the subject and why they feel that way.

Roberta, Thank you for the question and comment.  It's difficult to address because there are as you know so many ways to address this type of energy and every situation is different.  I took extended studies with Denise Linn and Karen Kingston and many others and there are so many different methods and blessings we use it's a very long and involved topic.  I can tell you I was very fortunate to have been able to continue studies with the best!

Dan, Thank you for your comment.  Energy is all around us at all times, in Feng Shui we simply seek to make it our own.  Having seen the same difficulties over and over I thought I would write about it.

Hi Grace, Thank you, I absolutely believe that.  You pick up on it and the people living there are constantly surrounded by it.  Purifying a space has been done for thousands and thousands of years, I have to wonder why it seems like a mystery.  But you have intuition and can feel it which can only help you in your business.

KC, I thank you for your comment but I see Penn and Teller as comedians, not people who anaylize and document things under the strictest of conditions.  I know they "knock" many things and that's how they make their living, I just quite honestly have a difficult time seeing them in the same light as the world renowned experts in this field from all over the world that I have been fortunate enough to study with.  I appreciate your thoughts, however.

Hi Carole,

Great blog. I know that I have been in some houses that all I have to do is walk in the front door and I don't like the place I am that way about  some restaurants too. These restaurants have come highly recommended and the food was great but I didn't like the feeling I felt while being there.

Diane, how nice to see you and thanks for your comment.  I hope at least with these posts they've sparked an interest.  I wish you a wonderful day.

Trace, Good point, I have felt that in other places including restaurants as well.  Sometimes it's just an uncomfortable feeling I can't put my finger on.  Thanks for your comment.
