When you are relocating to Baton Rouge, there is something you must have and that you cannot do without. Well, you can do without but it’s going to be a humdinger. Boxes! Boxes are mandatory when it comes to relocating to the Baton Rouge area or any other area, for that matter. It’s easy to forget how expensive boxes are until you are looking to move and need a ton of them. Of course, buying a few boxes here and there is fairly inexpensive but when you are hoping to pack up an entire residency…cha-ching, the money adds up. In order to save money while relocating to Baton Rouge, you must think thrifty. Instead of going out and buying brand new boxes, you’ve got to think of other ways to find used ones. Out of the handful of times that I have moved, I’ve learned to start my ‘box journey’ early in order to meet the move-out date.

What’s the first thing we do? Yes, the first thing I did was run to friends and family to see if they had any extra boxes around. I refused to be picky and took whatever they had, as long as it wasn’t falling apart. If I could fit something it in, I took it, used it and felt great about it. Of course, not too many friends and family members have numerous boxes hanging around so the ‘box journey’ continues. Another great place to get used boxes in Baton Rouge is by calling local companies around the area. Most companies, who deal with massive inventory, usually throw their boxes out in the back after a shipment. I had the great idea to go to a shoe store and when I got there it was box heaven. Seriously though, how many items can you put into a shoe box? Doh! Grocery stores are probably the best place to look for boxes but I would be sure to call before you go on the hunt. Calling makes it much easier but I must admit, not calling does add suspense to the ‘box journey’.

If you are still a few boxes short after visiting friends, family and local companies…there are other avenues you can take. While you probably do not want to foot the fat bill of a brand new stack of boxes, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, before you stroll into the local packaging and shipping company, think about looking online for used boxes. Say what? Oh yes, there is actually an online store called “Used Cardboard Boxes”. Their site mentions that they “rescue” truckloads of quality, used boxes from large companies; inspect them for quality, shape and strength and then they resell them to customers all over the United States. You can visit their site and purchase different moving kits for different sized rooms. This is a fabulous alternative for those of us that missed the grocery store shipment or couldn’t pry Aunt Betty’s last box out of her hands.

How to Save Money on Boxes When Moving to Baton Rouge

1. Start saving boxes well in advance.
2. Ask friends and family for boxes.
3. Check out local companies.
4. Check out “Used Cardboard Boxes”.

Lindsay - sometimes we forget to get boxes till the last minute.  I call the title companies, those paper boxes are sturdy and easy to handle.  Egg boxes from the grocery store are good, too.
