Do you want to know the simplest way to be totally healthy? It's really simple... I mean really simple. 90% of the time, only eat foods that have one ingredient. That's it. ONE ingredient such as: eggs (from true free range chickens), vegetables, nuts (not those canned and processed with palm kernel oil or other oils... check the ingredients... nuts, only no salt), fruits (but only ones in season- apples, all kinds of berries, etc. but try to get them from a farmer's market), organic chicken, organic fish... and lots of water... not just purified water but spring water. ... I think you get the idea. If you just make 90% of your diet this healthy it will be reflected in your body. This is not as easy as it sounds, especially in our country.
Starting this Thursday, I'll be going on a 40 day fast and consuming nothing but one ingredient foods. I will let you know how I feel during and at the end of the fast. My fast is from all processed foods. That also includes another food that actually and surprisingly is not that good for you, milk. I am talking about store bought homogenized, pastureized milk... skim, 2% or whole, all the goodness that was in it is no longer there. The heat in these processes has robbed all the best that milk has to offer. I am drinking whole real milk now. It's not as easy to find but it's out there. Raw milk has been and always will be the best milk you can drink. It's still full of all the vitamins and minerals and bacteria that boosts our immune system by adding the probiotics our digestive system really needs. Many who thought they were lactose intolerant have been able to drink raw milk without any problems. Children raised on raw milk exhibit the best health when compared to children raised on store bought milk. Even older children when switched to raw milk have seen allergies and even austism healed totally.
Our society, with all the new modern day processes and government regulations, has stripped all the wholesomeness out of our food supply while allowing toxic ingredients into it. How can this be? All in the name of making food cheaper. Why? So we can spend money on other things and the big 4 food companies can get wealthier and weathier. In America, the average person spends less than 17% of their income on food. Compared to other countries where it's more like 30%, our health is waning. Why? I've been educating myself on this and other things concerning our food industry. What I'm discovering is really and literally making me sick.... and you too. You maybe just don't know it. (The FDA and USDA is riddled and run by people who used to work and still have ties to the big food companies... Pillsbury, Cargill and Monsanto among them.)
Today I want to start with the meat industry. The number one most popular food in our country is the all American hamburger and fries. Umm doesn't that picture just make your mouth water? Do you really know what's in there? Do you want to? First the french fry... even fried in the most healthy of oils, it's still becomes something inside your body that your body doesn't quite know how to break down so most of it turns directly to fat cells. Fat cells that aren't easily gotten rid of. Secondly, the burger itself... this is where things get really ugly...
Most of our beef in America now comes from feed lot steers. Do you know what a feed lot steer is? It all started with fast food industry that began to overtake our nation around the time I was born. McDonalds, who is the largest purchaser of beef in the world, dictated to the industry just how they wanted their beef. Number one concern they had was that every burger must taste the same. The only way to do that is to feed the animals all the exact same thing. Thus the feed lots were begun. Feeding the cattle all the same thing... corn. No grass or hay. Basically they were all fed corn based grain which they found makes the steer grow twice as fast and all very similar in taste and texture. Cows were not created to feed on corn. They are meant to graze on grass and hay. They are meant to take a few years to gain the size they should be for butchering. Now they are raised in a year's time. If they wouldn't go to the slaughterhouse then, they'd be dead anyway in less than 6 months from their very poor diet of corn. (Sidenote: Did you know it's illegal to take a picture inside a slaughterhouse in most states?) So no matter how lean they sell it as, you are still basically consuming corn. Wouldn't you prefer to eat corn when you want corn? Of course these animals aren't fed the corn that we eat... it's a corn that is really not edible by our standards and is all GMO corn... Genetically Modified Organism corn. It's the same principle as this: Would you feed your children nothing but Doritos and expect them to be healthy? Of course not, if you did that, by the time they hit Junior High they would weigh about 300 pounds! (I didn't even address the bun... I'll cover that in a future post concerning bleached flour.)
So here's the good news. There is a healthy beef to consume. I mean healthy... as in good for you. Grass-fed beef or even better... bison. It's out there and it costs more but it takes longer to raise a grass fed steer. It takes more labor as well. It is sooo delicious too as well as much more nutritious. It also will not have anything in it that promotes the growth of free radicals in your body. Those are the nasty little things that promote cancer cell growth. There is a way we can bring down the cost a little too. Every time you want beef, search out and pay a little more for the grass fed beef and the industry will get the message and start mass producing this product for us. Every purchase is documented now and the data is what fuels the food industry.
If you want to get a better idea of what I'm talking about, research for yourself. It's all out there. www.grist.org is a site that is a bit radical but is reporting on the food industry on a regular basis. I also recommend these two documentaries that helped open my eyes... King Corn and Food Inc.
It is my opinion that we as a nation have focused on healthcare which is like a band aid on cancer instead of the real root of the problem. It just won't work... we need to take an ax to the root which is what we put in our bodies. Next up... HFCS... yuk!
