Questions to Ask Your REALTOR

In the business of buying and selling homes, it has constantly been repeated, "Choose a REALTOR! They have the answers to your questions."  Yes, this is still one of the smartest moves you can make, but what next?  Exactly what questions should you want answers to and why?

  • "Can you provide me with information about yourself including references?"  By asking this question, you can find out more concerning the experience and professionalism of your REALTOR, not that there should be any doubt as REALTORS are bound by a code of ethics.  It never hurts to ask anyway.  Also ask about other professional organizations of which he or she may be a member.

  • "What is your fee?"  Obviously this is need-to-know information that will be part of the big picture when going through financial details.

  • "What strategy do you have for getting desired results?"  You want to make sure that your REALTOR is dedicated to finding a home that meets your needs and has a plan for helping you to find the perfect luxury home.  How many homes can he or she show you and how will bidding be handled?  Who will present offers?

  • "Can you help me with the other details?"  There is more to buying a new home than just making an offer.  If you opt for construction, can your REALTOR help you if needed in working with the builders?  Do they have reputable contacts for home inspection, financial services, and insurance?  These are other details that will be important to handle, and it's easier if someone can point you in the right direction.

  • "What separates you from your competitors?"  When asking this question, you are trying to find out if the REALTOR that you're interested in has the qualities that are most important to you and a compatible business relationship.  Is this person genuinely concerned?  Is he going be available?  Can she work well under pressure?

  • "Do you offer any type of guarantee regarding service?"  This is a question of integrity.  Is this individual willing to stand behind his or her word and everything that he or she has offered to do, or is it purely lip service?

  • "Is there anything else that I should know?"  There are always going to be questions that you forget to ask, or don't know to ask.  This is your REALTOR's opportunity to fill in the blanks for you and help you to become more comfortable with the journey you are about to begin.
