VAT (vinyl asbestos tile)

9''x9'' tiles are typical of vinyl flooring tile prior to 1978. In 1978 the EPA deemed building material greater then 1% Asbestos content could not be used. However there were several building products that were used up until 1989 that still contained asbestos material. The most common form of asbestos material used during this period was mastic, this is the black material that binds onto the back of the tile to adhere it onto the floor. You will sometimes find mastic in the interior foundations, mastic was used to waterproof interior foundation walls.

Here are some interesting facts that that people won't tell you about asbestos:

  • The Asbestos lobbying group is one of the largest in the nation.
  •  If you are a home owner and are removing the asbestos material in your own home it is completely legal. People are continuously under the assumption that they must hire an abatement company to remove there asbestos
  •  If there is asbestos in a home it does not "have to be remove". Unless your particular loan or grant companies are contingent on removal of any product
  • The cheapest and most effective way to prevent asbestos from becoming friable is to encapsulate it. There are EPA approved sealants that are available online or at Grainger

Asbestos can lead to horrible cancers like Mesothelioma. I do not advise anyone to remove asbestos if they are not a professional, I am just simply stating the facts. If you need to sprucing up some of that old flooring in your home check out Debbie Gardner's site at Floor Coverings International

Thanks Michael the worst is when you can't see it and they plan on doing renovations. Unfortunately I wasn't gifted to see through walls or floors

Yes, I see this tile often, esp in basements.  Saw some yesterday, in fact.

The big issue w/ these types of tiles is if they are broken...and, this most commmonly happens after a flood (as was the case w/ my Sunday customer).  If that happens, it's best to have an abatement company take care of it and usually their insurance will pay for it.

Oh, and thx for the nice plug (and link).  I really appreciate that.

Wow, Mark.  That's the best radon explanation I've seen or heard and to the point.  You ARE our favorite local expert.  That home inspection I told you about?  My husband said no to a radon test, but I'm getting the kit you suggested the day we move in to this 1903 "fixer upper," believe it.  Then, we'll hire you to remediate.  Oh, like Debbie, we're mitigating for asbestos tiles, but usually ceilings and we're using contanment and Tivek to remove it safely  You're the best for keeping these concerns front and center and VISUAL!

ugh, I have run into this many a times in Ct. Nasty stuff and sometimes the asbestos can be in the glue as well.
