A Great Blue Heron is looking for breakfast or maybe just celebrating the quiet before the world intrudes.
Somewhere outside the Timber Greens subdivision people are starting their work day, getting in their cars, dropping the kids off at school (yes, some schools start that early here-and end before the day heats up too much), but here it’s quiet and he’s in no rush.
He’s stately, and magnificent and very, very beautiful. But that beak is deadly sharp and can take off a finger or two if you get too close. Don’t ever try to feed him; he’s not to be tamed.
He’s there simply for you to admire; you hold your breath because you don’t want him to know you’re taking his picture. He looks at you and his look says that you are insignificant in his scheme of things. He doesn’t fly away.
I like to think that he is admiring his reflection and thinking that he is, indeed, a GREAT Blue Heron. I feel so lucky to be here in this place and this moment to see this lovely creature and to be able to share him with you.
He did eventually take off, and I caught him flying away but when I looked at the pictures later, I thought this one conveyed so much more about peace, nature and tranquility. I hope I gave that to you.
