 ActiveRainPhotobloggerContest - Tranquility Bay

In the early morning, when the air is still and the sun is just stirring from his evening sleep, the pond is quiet. There are no golfers, no maintenance crew, just God’s creatures enjoying the peace.

A Great Blue Heron is looking for breakfast or maybe just celebrating the quiet before the world intrudes.

Great Blue Heron

The only sounds are the toads peeping around the pond and we have hundreds of them-today they are quieter than usual--perhaps respecting his presence; the birds calling back and forth while they look for food for their nestlings, and the breeze whispering through the trees.

Somewhere outside the Timber Greens subdivision people are starting their work day, getting in their cars, dropping the kids off at school (yes, some schools start that early here-and end before the day heats up too much), but here it’s quiet and he’s in no rush.

He’s stately, and magnificent and very, very beautiful. But that beak is deadly sharp and can take off a finger or two if you get too close. Don’t ever try to feed him; he’s not to be tamed.

He’s there simply for you to admire; you hold your breath because you don’t want him to know you’re taking his picture. He looks at you and his look says that you are insignificant in his scheme of things. He doesn’t fly away.

I like to think that he is admiring his reflection and thinking that he is, indeed, a GREAT Blue Heron. I feel so lucky to be here in this place and this moment to see this lovely creature and to be able to share him with you.

He did eventually take off, and I caught him flying away but when I looked at the pictures later, I thought this one conveyed so much more about peace, nature and tranquility. I hope I gave that to you.

Toni, You really have great photo ops of wonderful birds and wildlife.  A wonderful photo.  Your text really supports the name this bird is given.  I always have to stop when I see one also.

Thanks.

Hi Toni, Nice shot!  The photo does convey such a sense of tranquility unlike when the blue heron fly - I get such a kick out of the way they flap those huge wings.

Hi Toni...A Great Blue Heron has claimed our dock as a favorite spot to soak up the sun. What a sight.

Your photo shows the beauty of these birds and your words paint the scene wonderfully.
