The Kodak Zi8 with External Microphone. A Real Estate Agent's Review

Kodak Zi8 review

The Kodak Zi8. I like it! One of the things that annoy all of us about watching homemade videos is the poor sound quality that comes from cameras with no external mic.

The Zi8 has an external mic
and I chose it over the over the Flip for that reason, even though 25 of our fellow office-mates acquired the Flip. Now they wish they had the Zi8 or Playtouch by Kodak.

You can hear the clarity of sound in this video I made a couple days ago. The Zi8 is on a tripod 8 feet from me and the mic is clipped onto my collar.

Kodak Zi8 review

I purchased a cheap corded mic ( I don't remember the brand). It works well but is cumbersome.

My next purchase is a cordless mic followed by a wide angle adapter for the Zi8.

Even though I am in a husband and wife team, I take videos of myself by myself while my wife pursues other necessary duties.

Kodak Zi8 review

Using a tripod I set up the shot and test it before I  wax lyrical with my verbal presentation.

Failure to do this has lead to great audio spoken by a man with no head or a great presentation with no sound because the man forgot to turn the mic on.

Here is another tip about making videos
of yourself....Just let the camera roll and edit out the bad parts later.

Because I did not know how to edit video when I started, I would stop the camera, re-group and try again. That was extremely tedious and annoying.

Now if I mess up what I am saying, I just wave my hand across the camera and say, "Take 15" just like in the movies.

In search of easy to use editing software, I contacted my friend the video and real estate king of northern Maine, Andy Mooers.

If you want to do better local posts, video and photography, you need to subscribe to this guy... Andrew is fun... and willing to share the knowledge he uses to pull folks into the great northeast.

Andy recommended Cyberlink Power Director for a person new to the medium like myself. He used it for years before graduating to more complex software.

Power Director has 100's of "how to" videos that you can watch on Youtube to learn how to use its capabilities.

I am sure there are more expensive video cameras with greater capabilities available, but  in  this price range it is hard to beat the Zi8. It  meets all of my current needs and should for some time to come...

...of course I have been eyeing the Playtouch though.....

Steve, this is a great explanation & i still have my Flip which works ok but the mic is the real downfall plus its not being supported after 2012 so i need something to migrate to...how much does power director cost..couldn't find it on the site?  can you use it with any camera?  It is very cool...thanks

Steve, It's the video editing software part where I've been slow.  Bought better software, have started editing one of four patio home developments that we taped, but carving out the time to teach myself the proper editing techniques is the slow part.  Catch22, the education part would probably have been better done during the slower cold months rather than at the peak of our busy season.

Steve - a good post from an experienced vblogger! thank you
Audio quality is one of the keys to a good video! External mics are essential if you are not in immediate range of the onboard mic. One issue I have in watching others vids (I don't yet have a digital video cam like zi8 or playtouch to test myself). Why is it that the videos I watch from others with ext mic all seem to have this one audio channel problem? (put on your headphones/ear buds and watch videos, which is pretty much how I listen in all the time). It is strange. It's not exactly mono, you can hear this low, almost a bleed over, from the other channel, but it's odd. In your video the contrast is striking when you get to the slideshow with music track... the video blooms into full two-channel audio.

I want to solve this problem and post about it in my classroom. Problem is I don't have the setup to test at the moment. If you or Richard or anyone else gets to the bottom of this with a solution, I'm all ears!

Steve, thanks for the recap and congrats on your purchase!  It comes across great.  I too now am curious why the audio from the mic only comes through on one speaker...  maybe someone can give a tip on how to change that if it's possible!  Thanks for sharing!

Ok Steve, now you've convinced me about the Zi8.  You're getting to be quite the pro at making great sounding videos.  Think I'll stop by the local Best Buy to check it out.

Ginny, I have Power Director 8...the older version that I bought on purpose for around $60. It has 7 tracks for video, music, voice over etc.

Version 9 has 100 tracks and more capability BUT since I was new to the medium, I felt that would be more than I could learn quickly. Here is a link to a review and an offer for $50 for the Ver. 9 product (I bought my software in a store)

Bliz, Boy do I understand. I got the software in the winter and struggled to learn it. Not because it was hard...but I really was clueless about audio and video editing. There are still dozens of features I have yet to try. Making smooth transitions and working with combinations of video clips, music and still photos has been fun but challenging. I still have not tried voice over or music as backround to video clips. That may have to wait a while.

Like many things, I learned by accident.

I always take a test shot even though I think I am perfectly lined up...and I now turn the mic on the moment I see the test shot is good. I have made at least 8 videos that had no sound because I was always forgetting to turn the mic on. Even with a ritual...I still forget.

Good luck! You guys will be great.

Craig, Good catch. I have never listened to my stuff on head phones. One interesting test that I will try in the future is voice over. The video methodology I use know has the video and my voice on the same track. Voice over puts the spoken word on a separate track in Cyberlink Power Director. Maybe that will be stereo....we shall see.

The slide-shows I make with music are handled by the program itself. I use Danosongs mostly, plug that in to the photo-show style I want and the software does the rest. There are more complex ways to put music, and slides on separate tracks but I have not tried that yet. Version 9 of Power Director has 100 tracks!!!! I will upgrade to that at some point but that would fry my mind in its current state of experience.

You know, Andy Mooers might know the answer to your question. He has made over 400 videos with different editing software packages.

Nick, check the price on the  Kodak Playtouch too. That is an upgrade to the Zi8. If it has a wider aperture maybe you should buy that instead. The Zi8 is perfect for shooting me talking but for shooting videos of rooms in properties, the field of view is too narrow. That is why I am purchasing a wide angle attachment for mine.

Lee and Pamela, Craig is onto something here. If you haven't done so, you may want to invite Andy Mooers into Vbloggers. He may know the answer to this question.

From what I have seen, he has been doing this for years and has 100s of videos under his belt. I will invite him as well.

HI Steve and Jan,

Great bit of information here, we have a large Canon Video, but is often just too big to work with for a quick little video, will look into this one and or its family members. thanks for sharing.

Thanks Pfanns, I do not have much experience with video equipment but when I get a wide angle attachment and a cordless mic...I will be pretty well set for a while. Our office bought some lighting equipment so I will hopefully learn to use that in combination with video and stills. Lots of Pfunn ahead.

Thanks for this informative post.  I just purchased a Zi8 and I'm eager to get started.  The Vblogger Group convinced me to get into video.  I have iMovie on my iMac, so editing will be fairly straightforward.  All I need is -- something to say!
