Aaah, the slow pace of summer is about to arrive in Laramie, Wyoming. Last Saturday was graduation for most of our University college graduates (Law School graduates this Saturday), with finals and the semester ending as well. What does this mean for the Laramie residents that live here year round?
It means emptier streets, no rush hour traffic (if you'd call waiting an extra stoplight a rush hour) and less young people walking to campus loaded down with backpacks. It also means not as many alcohol related police calls or public disturbances reported in the local newspaper. Yes, our town is small enough that the courthouse news still lists names!
Even if only 3/4 of the approximate 10,000 student population leaves for the summer, this still creates quite a noticeable drop in people around town since the town itself only has a population of about 28,000. This impact is most definitely noticed. For restaurant and other business owners, this may not be a positive thing.
But.... as for me, and I suspect a few others, I do enjoy the calmer, slower pace of things when the grass finally turns green.
Hmmm. Our town gears UP for summer. Hello tourists! We look forward to September, when they leave and things quiet down a bit. There's a saying around here...If it's tourist season, why can't I shoot them?... ;)
Tourists, college students..... all necessary for our little towns to thrive yet it is ironic how much we locals can be annoyed by the intrusion! :-)
Brenda- I'm guessing some of the students are just as glad to be gone as you are to have them gone.
Hi Brenda - So that would make you, and I say this with the utmost respect, a "townie". From what I understand that word refers to one who was there before the "others" arrived and will be there after the "others" have left. In other words, the foundation that the community is built on and needs to survive. Thanks for the post.
