"Life in the big city." I miss it!

By

The thrill of working in a big city!Yesterday I had to go downtown for business. Here in Coweta County, when you use the word “downtown,” it is assumed that you mean the beautiful historic square in the heart of Newnan.

But my trip took me away from rural Coweta County to the big city of Atlanta, the “Jewel of the South.”

I worked for over thirty years in downtown Atlanta, and made the long commute each and every day. I loved the excitement of the metropolis and all of the cultural amenities it had to offer.

It wasn’t always easy negotiating around town, but it was always an experience. There is something to see around every corner that excites the eye and stimulates the mind.

Yesterday brought back a lot of good memories about the place that used to be "my world!"

I miss the thrill of working in the city. Every day brought new challenges and memorable experiences.

But I sure don’t miss the 45 mile commute!

Wow thrity years of Newnan to Atlanta ... I never worked or lived in the city and I truly hate driving there for anything even if I like the "thing" I drive there for.

Richard- I lived and worked in Houston for many years and while I love it... it is one gigantic traffic jam!  I hear 'ya!

Interesting you miss the action of working downtown but not the living downtown.  I think that is why most people want the suburbs!

I like the hustle and bustle of a city too, even though I have no desire to live in one.  That's the beauty of the suburbs - you can access the city when the mood strikes you.

Richard,

I have lived in small towns and large towns.  Must say traffic is a big pain.

Tammy...

Commute time was my quiet time ... it was fine as long as traffic was moving. Of course, most of the time traffic was NOT moving! THX

Kathy...

As Yogi Berra once said: "Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded!" Thanks so much.

Oh, I can SO relate to this post. I commuted to San Francisco for 17 years, what a thrill it was to "live" in The City every week day.

Good morning Richard...I've NEVER lived in a big city, always a small and laid back kind of place.  I do however love to visit larger places.  San Francisco, Chicago and New York have been my favorites.

I always loved the City and when I moved to south Jersey loved Philly too, but as I've gotten older they don't hold the allure they once did!

Having grown up in NYC, and now living in the Raleigh area, I miss the "Big City" too. But I don't miss the traffic, the commute, or the super fast pace.

I've lived in rural Nevada all my life ... my "Downtown" is "Reno, Nevada".  If you know that area it's a bump in the road compared to many real cities!

Remember in 1996 during the Olympics when they told us all... stay out of Atlanta.  I went twice to Six flags with the kids that week and there was no traffic, no lines... that was my best experience in Atlanta.

Me too Richard! I worked in the River Oaks area of Houston for seven years and it is about 5 miles from down town Houston. I went on to work in the middle of down town Houston for about 5 years and I still to this day miss all the excitement that were at these two locations.

If I had the means I would move into a high rise in either of those two locations...

Richard, I know what you mean. The energy of a city is exhilirating but the absence of traffic jams is more relaxing for the soul. What's the deal with AR's Ups and Downs? Are we in for more changes? Do we need to start another forum?

When we lived in Canton, I commuted to Marietta...first 25 miles down the interstate went by in a blur, but that last 5 miles took longer than the first 25!  I eventually did get very tired of it.

Atlanta is a beautiful city, difficult to navigate.  I will never forget the time my elderly (80ish) grandparants picked me up from the Atlanta Airport and took me to their home outside Atlanta in Smyrna GA...needless to say I took the transporter back to the airport!

I sell homes in Baltimore City all the time, but compared to Atlanta, Chicago or NYC it's quite small. Just the right size for a City fix.
