Southern Maryland has a long history of tobacco farming. Tobacco barns are structures that were used in the process of air-curing tobacco.
In the early 2000s Maryland instituted programs to discourage tobacco growth. This has left many tobacco barns throughout the region that are no longer being utilized.
I first became fascinated by these tobacco barns when watching my husband play golf on Oak Creek Golf course in Upper Marlboro, MD. The golf course cart path actually runs directly through one of these historic structures.
As I as driving through Calvert County, MD I was amazed at all the absolutely beautiful tobacco barns that were all around. These tobacco barns are an integral part of Maryland history and unfortunately, they are in differing stages of disrepair.
Stay tuned for more photos of these gorgeous and historic tobacco barns.
