platformOK folks, it has been a long time since I took the helm and announced a blog tour, but it is time to rally the troops and start up again.  Rainers are asking all kinds of questions about outside blogs and what better way get some answers than by looking around at what your peers are doing?

I have also heard a number of people asking what blogging system is best.  Its a question every blogger has to consider. I have blogged on Expression Engine, Blogger.com, Wordpress.com, ActiveRain.com, Myspace and Wordpress.org, and RSSPieces in addition to ActiveRain.  My platform of choice is definitely wordpress.org But I invite everyone who joins to point out to us what platform they are using.  If you can, add a few sentences about it's pros and cons.

Why go on Blog Tours?

Apparently there are a number of us who not only blog on ActiveRain, but maintain other real estate blogs out there in the 'real world.'  My other blog is called miOaklandCounty.com.  miOaklandCounty.com had its second birthday in March.  In the world of real estate blogging that makes me a nearly eligible for a pension or something.  But I have often said that the first 18 or so months were pretty darn crappy.  I was blogging on blogger.com and I wasn't connecting to the other real estate bloggers out there.  My content was boring even to me.  So I was fizzling.

Then along came ActiveRain.  Maureen McCabe invited me and I found a lot of other people talking about things I wanted to talk about.  Real estate to be specific.  Now I have a much better handle on where I want my blogging to go and how it will help me and my business.

I've learned so much from my fellow bloggers.  Thank you for helping me to hone this skill set.  The blog tour gives me new inspiration.   I hope we will see some new members joining us.

Who goes on Blog Tours?

Everyone is welcome to read the blogs that will be on this month's blog tour.  You do not have to have an outside blog.  These blogs will inspire new ideas on everything from formatting and platforms to content and commentary.

Here are some posts you can look back on if you are curious about what has taken place in the past.  But, really, its quite simple.  The benefits to the participants are that we often give each other feedback on site issues and you create incoming links to your own site every time you leave a comment.  I also usually pick up some new ideas for future posts.

Here is how it works:

  • Put a link in the comments here with your 'other' blog's URL.
  • Tell us what platform you are using.
  • If you have a post that you think we would particularly enjoy, use that as the landing page.  But the main page is just fine too.
  • Please only add one outside blog.  Save the others for next time.
  • If you post your own blog here, I ask you to visit at least the two other blogs that sign up immediately before you.   Of course, you are welcome to visit more.
  • If you add your blog early in the comments, you'll want to stop back later  to check out the new  additions.
  • When you are out visiting, leave a comment to let them know you stopped by.
  • Optional: You might consider adding someone to your blogroll.  If you don't have an outside blog, you could add them to your "favorites" on your blog settings or as an associate.

We are not judging or competing here.  This is just a chance to get out and see what our peers are doing.  New members, even if you don't have another blog, go take a look around.

Join us before October 15th to take place in the fun!

If you find out anything interesting while you are out there, report back here and let the rest of us know so that we don't miss it...

If you want to make sure you don't miss future blog tours, join blog tourists. If you are a real estate professional and you are not a member of ActiveRain, you should sign up here.  It is FREE and it will change the way you do business.

I have a Tomato hosted Wordpress blog,  BlogCalabasas. I love the Wordpress platform, I have other blogs that use Wordpress and I think they are the most professional and easy to manage.  I've used Typepad and Blogger in the past.

I checked out Carole Cohen's Cleveland Real Estate News.  I love the nice clean look and easy to read format.

The color and design of the header are gorgeous on miOaklandCounty .  Did you make that design yourself.  It's really nice and eye catching.

Hi Maureen,

My outside blog is a wordpress.org blog and it is very much a learn as I go thing for me. I love what I can do with it and the fact that it is self hosted.

Tracey, I got a free template from wordpress.  I have customized it a bit. The header is actually from a different free template by the same designer.  It is one of his wife's paintings.  I love it too.  Thank you.   Jim does a beautiful job with his tomato blogs.  They are some of the best around graphically, imho.

I think that when I chose my template I chose something without a fixed width.  Maybe that is what Tracy's is too.

One more thing, Moni.  Your meta tags are showing up at the top of the page for me and they should not be visible, imho.

Moni your blog is gorgeous. And I agree I think the theme you chose is what is determining the width. Maybe Mr. Wordpress (!!!) can customize the width that will give Jay another project :-)

Maureen....how do I get rid of it???  Must be a box to check off in options somewhere. Thanks for the heads up.

Excellent! I love the blog tour!!

Please stop by The Phoenix Real Estate Guy.  Running as a self-hosted Wordpress blog. (I use GoDaddy for hosting). I use a heavily customized three-column theme.

Wordpress is the best, IMHO. Self hosted (as opposed to Wordpress.com) allows you MUCH more flexibility with design and features.

Moni - your theme determines the width. It can be changed by going into the themes CSS files. Tricky, but do-able.

I'm off to see the others!

Maureen - great header on your blog, and I really like the layout of yours.

Carole - your blog is so crisp and clean-looking, that makes it very easy to read.

Tracey - LOVE the header of yours and the colors you used!  That pumpkin and the green really drew me in.

Monika - you already know how much I like yours.  What about your other one that we were emailing about?  That one is really nice looking, too.  I didn't see the words that Maureen mentioned, already fixed maybe at this point?

Jay - really really like yours!

Mariana - your blog has really nice colors, and I like the layout, too.

Debbie - your "silver bee" is wonderful!  I love that graphic, and the layout of yours is really nice.  I like how the titles stand out on yours, too.

Brian - love the green for you!

KK's Denver IQ is definitely what I'd like to be when I grow up!!  Beautiful as I would have expected!!

Whew!!  I think I got them all so far, I hope!!

MF ~ Thanks for the link to Denver I Q

It is still in it's infancy being only born a couple weeks ago.  We are working on getting our broker and affiliates to blog, NONE of whom have tried until recently.  So far I'm pleased with the beginning efforts.

Sorry Brian Brady,  I have to keep you informed of the Rockies scores, in case you are too busy to watch  TV in SD!  :)

Everyones blogs are really coming along.  AR really has brought along some fabulous bloggers.   Guess they want to keep everyone sheltered so they don't leave the nest. Funny thing, I think we will always come back here to socialize and have fun. That ship has never left port!

The IQ is a Wordpress blog.  I still have my Typepad blog, which by the way I wish I could twix my nose and turn into a real Wordpress Blog.

I have had my outside blogs going now since January 2007. One of them focuses on Minneapolis, but also luxury real estate. Let me know what you think...visit MinneapolisLuxuryRealEstate .

My platform is Blogger. My address currently has the "blogspot.com" at the end. I was just able to buy the same domain name, without the "blogspot" at the end. My question is that if I change it to just the domain name "MinneapolisLuxuryRealEstate.com" will I lose my number 1 spots in the search engines? Will the new domain name have to start all over again, or will it just simply replace the"MinneapolisLuxuryRealEstate.blogspot.com"? Or will I have to submit the new domain to the search engines as a "new" blog and have to wait six months to reclaim my positions?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated before I make the change!

Hey Maureen...  I use Wordpress.com now, I have been playing with Bluehost as you know and I will most likely move over this week to Wordpress.org.

Here's my blogs for the tour.  I have FocusOnFrederick.com is my "Outside" blog, my mobilephone blog is just for the fun of it with my camera phone.

I have used Blogger and I have yet to see google send me an alert on the stuff I have posted there.  Now as for wordpress...with in an hour my google alert goes off letting me know I am indexed.

I love the stuff that the Tomato does...I haven't spent much time on a theme for mine.  I guess once I am on Bluehost I will be more creative.

I will be back tomorrow after I look at everyone else's blogs...

Maureen! I love seeing your familiar face every now and then on the outside blog. I use Typepad but am in the process of redesigning and switching over to Wordpress because pretty much everyone at Inman Blogger Connect said that Wordpress was the way to go due to better search engine optimization and plug-in capabilities. Typepad is easy to get started with and has some nice features, but SEO is everything so I'm going that direction. Thanks for sponsoring the tour!

As to the blogsport vs no blogspot.  Everyone told me I would be better off just pointing the non blogspot domain to blogspot as long as I was there. Others may have a different opinion?

I visited Carol's blog and found it to be very locally centered with pertinent infromation that those living in the area would be quite interested in. Love your new blog, Carol. I was curious about a couple of things on your blog, one is 3C Delivers the Real Estate Pitch!...what does that mean? And I think I noticed Spanish above the feed icons, can you elaborate on that?

Next, I visited Maureen and Dmitry's blog and played with the Chat widget but it no one replied, I was so sad. It was the first time playing with one of those. Then I noticed that Maureen is with Sotheby's. Roberta Murphy just recently went with them, you might want to hook up with each other. Now for the blog article, I read "This is not a buyer's Market!" love the photo of mom and babe and the article tells it like it is. Loved the blog roll.

I am currently using blogger at http://www.nickbastian.blogspot.com/ but will be switching the really long address to a domain name from another web site that I just use for "past clients." I feel that site will be better used as a blog. (long story, sorry)

Maureen,

Thanks to your outside blog tours and encouraging comments from other rainers that visited I've kept up my other blog.  It now is doing better than my activerain blog. While I don't get too many comments I have been receiving many emails. I'm getting about 115 visitors a day. Just last week I did a blog about a new development on the upper west side and the developer emailed me telling me he read my blog and I should write a blog about their other two developments. (so I did)

I'm still on blogger (free) but it seems to be working. I took your great advise and am using my own domain rather than blogspot.com. My SEO is good. I added a weekly Television show called NY Open House.

I have an RSSPieces blog:  BestRealEstateLakeNorman.  I chose to use RSSPieces because I didn't have the time or knowledge to design and host my own.  And, they really know the SEO world!  I keep learning more and am fine-tuning as I go.  FYI, the Restaurant reviews are written by my friend/client.  My goal is to have guest posts by members of the community to make it feel more like a community effort.  Plus, they spread the word!

Jay and Jack:  I think your look is very unique and clever...I love the cartoonish feel and fun, folksy feel to your posts. Very friendly and inviting!

Steve:  I far prefer the look and content of your grdowntowncondos to your real estate site.  The first offers value to the reader and is visually appealing while the second is a bit too hard-sell to me.  I believe blogs should not blatantly sell yourself but be informative and allow your readers to get to know you.  (FYI, in your title you have You're instead of Your.  Sorry, but I thought you should know.)  I do think you should have "normal" URLs.  Great effort!

Carol, thanks for coming by and for replying. I must be living right...don't have to come back...saying a week in Florence and another week in Tuscany...all is right! Sounds as though you love Italy as much as I do!!

Maureen,

Thank you for the post and I think it is great!  Will visit the blogs ASAP!

My other blog is on Windows Live Spaces.  It is free and not too bad to work with.  The only down side is that it is not JAVA friendly but does use HTML, Flash and PHP so it is like a Word Press or My Space blog format.

Feel free to check out Table Talk With Apella at http://apellatabletalk.spaces.live.com Thank again.

I am glad to see you touring again Maureen!  I joined your group a while ago and keep checking back for new entries.  I am glad to see this entry as now I have a lot of outside blogs to tour and sign up for on my google reader.  Thanks so much!  Mine is http://www.mountain-living.com/blog.    Also built on Wordpress, as is my entire website.

Thanks Maureen.  It was Erin Pheil at http://www.timeforcake.com/.  She is young (30ish) and does a fabulous job! She has done a lot of real estate sites and really knows her stuff.  Did you see the slide show? http://www.mountain-living.com/blog/2007/10/03/summit-county-colors-a-colorado-slideshow/

I just wish it were embeddable elsewhere, but at the moment it isn't.  It is a plugin they found that works with wordpress.

All I have to do is ask for something and they find a way to do it.  I love it!

Great idea, Maureen.  I visited Joanne's blog about the autumn leaves in Colorado and Rich's about keeping a good attitude instead of believing the Sky is Falling In. My blog about St Petersburg and  Tampa Bay real estate and lifestyle and is at blog.ssimms.com It was done by Real Estate Blogsites, which allows for multiple channels on the same blogsite.

The Blog Tour is a great idea, particularly visiting other Blogs that have previously signed up.

My Blog is The Pet Realty Network Blog hosted by Wordpress.org.  In case the title does not give it away it is for Pets, Real Estate, News and Views.  The last post is from Monday at the Waterbowl on our Web site and if you do not like pets you will think we are all "goofy".

Now on to visit other sites.

Yikes!  I added everyone to my google reader and I have 474 posts to read!  About 100 of those are a backlog of problogger and Lorelle on Wordpress, but I have some work to do!  I will be blogging in bed again tonight...   ;-)

I just joined the group and am excited for the tour!  I can't wait to visit all the sites.  Here is mine- BlogbytheBay.com.  It is wordpress.org, self managed and hosted.  I would love feedback- the good, the bad and the ugly.  Be nice, but be honest.  I want to make it better!

Maureen- your blog is beautiful and I do love that header.

FOR Sharon- I went back to your gorgeous site.  On my browser, your blog text is running intro your right hand column.  My browser is firefox. If you don't see it, let me know and I can screen shot it for you.

Sparky & Buckwheat- love your blog, and visit it often.  I know Mark is a wordpress guru.  Did one of you do the graphics as well?

Joanne Hanson's site is gorgeous, I will have to check out her designer.  I would love to work with a designer who still gives me control!

Diane Aurit's site is also very pretty.  RSS Pieces does a great job!  Are you getting leads from up.  Curious since they are supposed to be so great with SEO.

I have blog envy!

Maureen,

I am back again to say that the blog tour is great!

I have checked out the blogs and enjoyed many of them.  It is hard to keep up with the growing amount of blogs so once again thank you.  Looks like the list will grow as there are many beautiful with a ton of knowledge.  Cant wait to see more!

Ginger Wilcox, Marin County Realtor: just told me about this group and your October blog tour.

I posted to Blogger regularly for eight months, but the only comments I ever got were spam.  After ActiveRain, I started three different free blogs on Wordpress and found it very easy to use. My new Tomato blog, FocusOnCrofton.com, will replace two of those.

I really like the clean simple look of http://www.blogcalabasas.com/ - clearly it is a custom site, head and shoulders above most blogs.  The only thing I would change is to make it easier to figure out whose site it is.  Maybe a name and/or photo in the left navigation bar, or more conspicuous on the "about" page.  'Love the look.

I also like http://www.blogbythebay.com/.  There are nice photos of the local area, excellent posts with photos, helpful info in the nav bar.  The subscribe button was easy, and so was the search box.  Good job.

yeah, kinda like sitting in bed late at night and watching "Seems like Old Times" on TBS....

Maybe our next tour should be like one of those "Where are They Now"...celebrity shows on TV. We could call up and interview all those people who used to post on AR, but have been MIA for so long. Possible episodes:

Angus "The Moo-Man" Woodbury

Sara Lipnitz

Joshua Plummer

Rory Siems

David Eiglarsh

Just a note - I've been using this list to update my blogroll. I have my blogroll set up by state/city to make it easier for people to locate a realtor by the state they might want to move TO.

There are some blogs above that don't mention their state. HINT - HINT ... you might want to see if your blog includes your state somewhere in the blog's copy. Those of us outside your area don't necessarily know where the counties or lakes are. It also might mean you're being missed by Google.

I just went to Margaret's Blog and love it. She has the neatest contest ...well it's not a contest really but she has a lovely house pictured and if the owner contacts her they get a gift. What a great idea to encourage consumer contact.

Elaine...I like that list idea!

Maureen, I'm going to be checking out a number of these blogs.  Right now, my outside blog is on Real Town.  They have changed their format recently on the backside to improve SEO.  It seems to be working better in terms of SEO for me.  My outside blog is http://laudu.realtownblogs.com. I've considered other blogging platforms like wordpress and blogger but have not tried them yet. So, I'm off to check out Monika & Elaine's outside blogs.  Thanks for the assignment. :)
