Internet Reputation, What's Yours?

Recently a friend called me and was quite upset with her Google juice that morning. Someone has gone in and slandered her on the Web. That's when I decided I would review my presence and see if there was anything I needed to attend to. Luckily for me, I was good.

The War between You and Google

The importance of the individual’s online reputation is vital. Thanks to the increase in computer-based communication, we now see way more information about individuals than ever before. It is possible to use the Internet to get to know nearly any detail you’d like to know about a person, even if it’s extremely personal. For example, companies can type a future employee’s name into Google to check what pages that individual is associated with. If that person’s online reputation is negatively skewed in any way, it could ruin their chance at the job.

Likewise, if a customer is checking out a company for the first time by typing their name into the Google search bar, they have an opportunity to find a history of that company and see what sorts of pages are associated with the business. If the company’s online reputation is negative in any way, it could deter the customer away from the company.

It’s like a war, fighting against Google to keep the first 10 views as positive reflections of the business or individual. With negative business reviews or old pictures posted to Facebook popping up, many times the person doing the search gets a bad first reputation. Both businesses and individuals need to realize how important it is to have their initial pages that pop up on a Google search work.

Review your first ten views. If any of them are negative, contact the web administrator to assist you in cleaning it up or removing it.

There are numerous companies that are there to assist you. We researched quite a few and my friend decided on:

There was another AR member that posted recently that she received a bad review on yelp (I think) from a competitor.  There are pros and cons to having your name out on the internet and like you said, if you check it on a regular basis, hopefully you can fix it.

Negative comments, no matter how painful and embarrasing, can be opportunities to show the public how you handle complaints..they can also give you food for thought that maybe there is a grain of truth to what they're saying. It's not easy sometimes looking in the mirror.

True Lynda but some times the comments are false and just ruined your rep. One friend stated he was in a DMV scam...false. Another was in lesbian movies false again. The friend I was referring to was outfight slander and it was very sad to see a confident person be reduced to sheer terror of her rep ruined by This.
