Sad Boys No More!

Like many people in real estate, I spend a lot of hours working during what would otherwise be family time. So, I try to incorporate my kids in to as many things as possible so I can get more time with them, even when I am working. When I deliver pizza on moving day, I try to bring the boys. When I do pop bys for past clients, they often come too. When I need "actors" for my marketing pieces, I get them to help me.

(The fact that I think they're adorable doesn't hurt that part of the plan!).

One day last year, I was working to develop a postcard for people who were in trouble in their home - upside down, behind on their mortgage, facing foreclosure, etc., and I wanted a "sad boy" to feature on my postcard. So, I put my boys on the couch and coached them on what I wanted, and then I sweetened the deal by bribing them with ice cream if they could be give me the saddest possible face.

Sad Boy No More

It worked for awhile, but eventually, they were trying so hard that they began to crack themselves up, and after that started, it fed back and forth between the two of them until being "sad boys" was the furthest thing from their mind.

We did manage to get some great photos for my postcard, but better yet, I was able to incorporate my boys into my work, and we all had a great time while getting "work" done.

If you're curious about my "sad boy" campaign, and whether or not I got any sad looks from it, I did the post above with one a while back. And, yes, I finally did get some great shots from my older son who had a better idea of the game.

Hi Christine,  Involving your kids in your business is great.  My Dad was a Realtor® when I was in school, and I enjoyed being involved and helping him when appropriate.

Christine, I enjoy getting my kids involved to. My 11 year old daughter loves it but my 9 year old son is much harder to convince.

Christine

Think what a wonderful set of lessons your boys are learning about being caring, and more. I bet this will impact them for many years to come, perhaps in ways you have yet to realize. I think it's very cool!!

That is hysterical, Christine.  I can't tell if the one on the right is laughing or crying though.

Joan - Thank you.  We sure think so ; )

Kwee - I think it's great to see the other side of people we work with.

Jon - We did have so much fun.

George - My mom started a mortgage brokerage when I was a kid.  I spent many an hour helping, and as I discovered later, learning.

Bob -  Maybe you need a better bribe?

Sheila - I would expect they could offer even more help.

Andrew - Don't they?

Jeff -  I learned a lot of lessons helping my mom, and I hope it's good for them in many of the same ways.

Kirsten-  I tend to post on them frequently.  I'll try to get some "sad" pics up tomorrow.

Stacey - They are silly and do sad fairly well.

Elisa - He was trying.

Jane - We had so much fun. He was laughing but trying hard to remember to be sad.
