tiny rooms: break some rules!

You've probably heard a few rules regarding what to do if you have a small space. There are certain rules that you are supposed to abide by to help it seem more size able. Some of these really are necessary, but some really just need to be broken. Here are some tips from noted HGTV designers on what rules really were made to be broken!

-Paint it white: FALSE. This is not necessarily the best thing for your space! If you want to make it more drab...maybe. But, brighter colors might be just what it needs!

-You shouldn't use patterns in a small room: WRONG. Feel perfectly free to experiment with textures and patterns to add some interest. You should want to be in your rooms!

-Get rid of the knick-knacks: Big, fat NO. This is what the designers call a "visual destination." If you clump them together in an interesting fashion, it's likely to make your room high fashion! Sometimes those little, random knick knacks can look out of place when they sit all by their lonesome in an area. Instead of doing that to make the room more minimalistic, create a piece of art.

-Get small furniture. NOPE. Actually, sometimes a few more substantial pieces can make the space look bigger. Of course, don't over do it and be sure you can walk around everthing with ease, but it's okay to go big and go home.

-Use lots of mirrors to make your room look bigger: NO WAY, JOSE. Go ahead- line your walls with things you actually like instead of a confusing hall of mirrors. Your goal should not be to make every room look as big as possible. It's okay to be unique and a little quirky. Your home is supposed to reflect who you are- not what you look like.

If you have a small space, go ahead and have fun with it. The rules of design are not hard an fast. Make it YOU.

Love this post!  There's something so off-putting to me about a stark-white room, no matter what the size is!  Our son has the smallest bedroom on the planet, but we added a textured aquatic-themed wallpaper and an undersea mural, and it really opened the space up.  Not what I would recommend for EVERY room, of course, but it worked well for us in this case!

Some of this goes against everything I seem to read. I guess there is no "right way!"
