If You're Transferring Your AR Blog to Your WP Blog...

I'm not fond of writing. I don't want to start over in case anything untoward happens to our beloved platform, ActiveRain. So last night, I took advantage of the link provided by Jorgen Hahn, the former AR CTO, to transfer my blog over to my new Wordpress blog. (You don't have to do this, but it's always a good idea to have a backup for your blog--Brad Andersohn said so!)

Fine, so after the transfer I scanned through some pages to see if the format changed, and it did, but not too bad. Some of the pictures didn't transfer, some videos didn't upload, the tags were stripped, the comments didn't transfer, some widgets didn't transfer, either. No problem. But to my horror, some posts from private groups that I belong to, like an old moderators group (get real... nothing nefarious about AR private groups) were transferred as well. So what? The private posts were now on public view on my WP blog!

Fortunately I didn't have much to go through, since I'm not a prolific blogger. I Edited those posts, put them in Private view, Deleted others, and then Updated (always do this.) Just think if you had said something untoward about Bob Stewart in private... you'd be banned! Just kidding, Bob. :)

I'm staying because it's a friendly community, regardless of occasional tussles. What family doesn't have flare ups? It's certainly interesting to watch though.

Yoli,

You might want to mention that anyone subscribed to someones Outside WP blog will get an email update of every single post!!

Time to delete private groups?   Good catch, especially about Bob Stewart:) although your posts are freely read on AR...hope you knew that:)

Newbie feature:)

Thanks everyone! With family, real estate, 31 Days of May Challenge and this, I've been a bit busy. TGIF!

Gloria - you're welcome. I hope it's helpful somewhat and thank you for the suggest. :)

Hi, Mike J. - That's a lot of blogging! I created my WP account about a year ago, but only started the blog just two weeks ago because of the downtimes here. It's good for me or anybody else to have other avenues like you and other bloggers here already have.

Thank you for the tip about HTML Copy/Paste and your comment!

Hi, Kathy - I didn't think of it that way, but it's a great analogy. Thanks for your support! :)

Hi, Sailor Sardi.  Many enjoy reading your musings, so you wouldn't want them to wander the wilderness if you all of a sudden lose your blog, wouldja? ;)

John, I wouldn't have known had Jorgen not provided the link to the activeumbrella. Thanks for naming another source. :)

Hi, John M. - I'm not leaving AR, I'm sorry that was the impression. Creating the WP blog is a steep learning curve for me. LOL

I'll be looking forward to the post you brought up. Thanks for dropping by!

Hello, Allison! Since the format and the other stuff didn't transfer, yes lots to go through to make the posts at least pleasant-looking. Thanks for your comment!

Mike M. - Transferring manually will be a huge undertaking for those with thousands of posts, for sure. This link doesn't discriminate, btw. Thanks for dropping by!

Karen - thank you for the feature. All, please listen to what Karen said about the e-mail updates to your WP blog subscribers. My goodness, I didn't realize that... sorry!  Of course I only have four subscribers to my WP blog. LOL

I would edit the post, but since it's an entry to the 31 Days of May Challenge, it will post on the latest date instead of 5/12.  I hope the participants know this.

I think private groups have its purpose, just don't talk about Bob Stewart. (I kid Bob, though he didn't even know it.) LOL

Very interesting topic.  My son (Computer Engineer) setup my wordpress blog for me and indicated that it can be invaluable.  I have started to blog the original post there, give a summary in AR, which links back to my WP Blog  The traffic has really started to pick up on my blog

Hi Yolanda!  Thanks for the info.  I haven't looked into this yet, but would love it if my AR blog would transfer to WP, just minus the private/members only stuff.

Good evening, Olga.

If you keep the box unchecked that says, "Automatically post the transferred blog, etc." the posts should all go to Draft. I didn't realize that it was checked when I transferred... beginner's mistake.  You can then go through each post and select which ones you want published in public.

Here is the link to transfer... https://activeumbrella.heroku.com/ Thank you for your comment.

Hi, C Lloyd. Can I borrow your son to help me out?  LOL  It's a steep learning curve, but fortunately I'm not being graded or anything like that. It's interesting and frustrating at the same time. :) Thanks for stopping by!

ALL - There is a way to avoid the problem I had.

Just uncheck the box that posts the blog automatically to WP. The blog will be stored in DRAFT if you don't check the box.

I didn't read the instruction. Duh.
