Stacked MailI've recently commented on a blog "They're At It Again) where Sharon (Toni) was talking about receiving SPAM.

This gave me the idea of blogging here to help others who may find my method useful and beneficial.

I have approximately 8-10 email addresses.  WAIT !!! DON'T GO YET....

Yes, I have 8-10 email addresses but in reality I only have 3 email accounts that I check...  The rest of them send the emails straight to my real email addresses.

Here is the TRICK....

1- If your email provider offers email forwarding services, then create an email address and forward them to the ones I really use and not advertise...

2- When I have to register to websites, I always use the same FAKE email address, where the confirmation mail goes to the FAKE email which is then forwarded to my REAL email.  All I have to do is to click on the link to verify it.

3- After 6-8 months, when I receive too many junk to this FAKE address, it is time to delete it, and move on to a different one  :)  And, I let the SPAMmers, send the junk to an invalid email.

4- I have 1 personal email that all my family and friends use.  1 business email that I respond with and advertise on my business card.  And I have one extra personal email that I created as a backup in case something happens to my personal email address.

If you have your own website and get a hosting service, you will definitely be able to create additional email addresses and forward them to your REAL ones...

Met - I have a similar thing.  My business email feeds into my personal email then I have another Yahoo email that I use when I have to sign up for something that requires an email address.  That one is filled with spam.

My business account also has a cool feature that no matter what you type in before the @ sign it will come to my address.  So if I do a particular ad I will make it Info@   Promo@  Staging@  that way I can track where the people found my address.

Hi Maureen...

True, I forgot to mention that, this method gives you the upper hand to track where the emails are coming from...

Mehmet, OMG that sounds way to complicated for me.  I can barely keep up with the two I have!

Met, an excellent tip. I have tried to do the same but I am not as organized as you are about it!

TERRY:  It really is not that hard.  All you need is to keep up with one or two email addresses that you are using regularly.

CHARLES:  I have had them get out of hand couple of times, but it doesnt' really matter because, if the junk mail starts pouring down from one email address, all you have to do is to go back to the settings and delete that account.   :)

Mehmet,

I am VERY disorganized (if you want to call it that!)...

For each service I sign up for (airlines, activerain, etc. etc.) I first create an email alias on my webserver that forwards all emails to my "real" email address, which I never give out. Sometimes I have one forwarding to another that forwards to my "real" address.

I know to many people this will sound extreme, but since I can set a new "alias" up in less than 10 seconds, I just do it. The benefit to this method is that if i start getting spam directed to one of the addresses, I simply shut that one off and the spam to my email stops. I also know which address (or vendor...) was the culprit!

On top of all that, I also change my main email addresses every 1-2 years. I'm sorry, I just don't want to deal with junk email and/or have my email program throw something away that might be legitimate.

If, somehow, a legitimate vendor's email address starts getting spammed, I simply go create a new one, change the email address with the vendor via the internet and the spam stops.

Once again, this is very extreme, but I receive over 100 legitimate emails on a daily basis (message boards, automated listing notifications, etc.) and I don't want to deal with the junk mail.

Benjamin,

This is exactly what I do (except, I use the same junk for several places and for cople of months) just to protect my real email address.

All this for one reason, to keep my REAL email address from receiving junk...

Trust me, it is not extreme... well, at least to me, it is not

That's great Mehmet.  This was mentioned to me about a month ago by a client of mine.  I've been utilizing the idea and it's quite smart, because those spammers send so much junk.

Hi Julie,

yes, they do send a lot of spam, and it is almost impossible to use a filter, as they come up with new techniques to by-pass them.

Mehmet - spam is always a problem. I have a free Yahoo account that I use to fill in on warranties, at trade show booths, etc. I can check it once a month and catch anything that might be useful but in the meantime it's 99.90999% spam.

Sharon,

I know the feeling and that is exactly why I have so many email addresses  :)
