ActiveRainPhotoBlogger Contest - Fall Fire in New York

The threatening storm had passed us by...

...and the sun was filtering through the cloud cover creating bright sunlight in the midst of dark cloud cover.  As the sunlight hit the trees, it created a stark contrast to the darker clouds above.  The trees looked literally as if they were on fire. Against the cloud cover, the effect was almost surreal.  I wish I could take full credit for the capture, but let's face it, it would be very difficult to take a bad photograph under such circumstances.

A need for renewal....

Although it had been a busy and difficult  day, I was determined to fit in a hike.  I had just found out that my father’s cancer - kept in check by biologics and chemo - had returned full force.  We were  at the end of the line.  You know its bad when it is strongly suggested that the patient get their “affairs in order”.   He had dodged so many bullets over the past  2 and a half years that I scarcely believed the news myself.  But I knew instinctively that this time was different.  Our relationship had always been contentious.  I had only really gotten to know him during the last three years of his life after the crisis was upon him.  I needed desperately to push a reset button and get  my mind and heart in a better place so I could better face the days ahead.  Getting out of doors and forgetting the “real world” is one my great stress relievers.  I needed that walk - and I had to make it happen.

Fall fire at the Rockefeller Preserve - and the changing seasons...

It took some work on my part, but I was finally able to carve out a couple of hours and so I found myself  at the Rockefeller Preserve in Sleepy Hollow NY with my ever-ready companions - Jade and Tundra in tow.  The weather was blustery and crisp. The Preserve is beautiful in all seasons, but I’ve got to admit that the autumn venue is my favorite.  The lazy long  days of summer had passed and the animal residents are busily preparing for the winter that lies ahead.  I got  mental images of all the animals  saving and storing and shoring up for the cold and lean months ahead.  The same can be said for the trees that are shedding their leaves in a magical display of bright color.  The process that they go through is as biologically necessary as it is visually spectacular. Soon I found that my camera was taking full advantage of peaking fall foliage.   The concerns of the day and life were fading and I was caught up in the beauty of the place.

The Cycle of Life...

The cycle of life continues on.  We can not stop it.  My father lost his battle with cancer on April 30 2010.  He went to a better place after his long battle.  And the Preserve?  By late April it was busy renewing itself with the promise of a new life.  The goslings and ducklings were hatching and taking their first tentative swim in the lake, the birds were building nests and foraging for their young. The trees were budding and blooming and the Peonies Monument planted at the entry to the Preserve for the victims of 9/11/2001 were starting to bud.

We do not live forever.  We are all a part of the cycle of life.   What is important is how we choose to live.  Do we leave the world we lived a better place for our presence or not?

Beautiful photo. I know you took the photo in the Fall but doesn't it feel like Fall now even though it's Spring?

The colors, and composition of this photo are astonishing!  Those are wonderfully warm colors of autumn.  There's no question about that!

That is a beautiful picture.  I like how you were able to get your headings to be in the same color family as the photo.

Hi Maria - The storm was receeding... It has been looming and when it passed us by - I took my opportunity.

Hi William - The need to get out was so strong in me that day.  It was during the last phase of my father's final illness.  We had just gotten reports that the cancer had retunred with avengance - and I just needed a place to decompress.  The blustery air was like a pure energy surge. And the sky and sunlight created this very unusual effect.

Hi Mitchell - some days it does.  Its not balmy - although the humiity has been up from time to time.  Then you know its spring.

Hi Margie - I love fall too.  Perhaps my favorite time of year.  I used to love winter - but it has been so miserable these past couple of years that I'm liking it less. Our summers have been very humid and hot.  So now its Fall, Spring, Summer/Winter - not sure where the last two stand.  I like blustery weather - but not when its 5 degrees and a solid sheet of ice.

Hi Ron - Thanks...It took a long time to find the right one.

Hi Myrl - Thank you so much.  I have to admit that the subject matter made it tough to do a bad job.  But this photo is one of my favorites.

Hi Gail - coming from you that is a real complement!  Thanks!

Hi Sondra - I did it on Google Docs.  It works well with AR.

Splendid photo of Fall Fire and a stormy sky!

Some of the most beautiful countryside I have witnessed was in New York!

We do have a diverse country filled with nature's splendor!

Ruthmarie...I had the opportunity (back in 85-86) to experience a drive through Lace Placid area and experience the changing of the leaves and the outstanding show of foilage ...so for me...New York was (is) a place I think of when the foilage photo was displayed before me here. We continued on to Plattsburgh but I will never forget the scenery when we came over the crest of the hill to see all.

H Judi,

We do  have a very diverse country. Geographically our country is large and extremely diverse climate-wise.  From tropical to arid, to mountainous.  My Aunt lives in CA wind country (Lodi CA) The area is arid and underground water feeds the vines.  She came to NY three times during my Dad's battle with cancer.  She would always fly into Westchester Airport (White Plains) and when they were on approach - she would see how lush the trees were. Totally different from where she was from.

Hi Sally,

Of course we are way south of that by nearly 300 miles.  However, the foliage is similar - we just get it later in the season.  But I'm glad some people do think of New York  when they think of fall color.  It's amazing how few do.  I think its because we are so near to Manhattan.

Hi Ruthmarie - We have had great fall foliage seasons here the past few years. It takes just the right mix of weather all season to be able to capture it at it's peak as you have done here. Great job!

Ruthmarie, I can understand why this photo has such special meaning for you. You captured the season well with the blending of the season and how nature changes as it is intended to change.

Great choice, photo and story too!

Hi Andre - thank you - As I said  - with the subject matter - there was no way to go truly wrong on this.

Hi Michael - People think of NYC when they think NY.  So the countryside often surprises them.

Hi Patricia - It was a great day for a walk in the Preserve.   And a very sad time in my life. But the beauty of the place is so uplifting that your cares just melt away.

Ruthmarie, this is a touching story of a cycle of life. I hope your dad lived a good life and left good memories with those close to him. I lost my dad in April of 2010 also, never being able to develop a close relationship with him. Since I left Poland in 1981, I've only seen him a few times before he passed on. You are a very talented writer and photographer - your story and a photo draw the reader in. Best wishes.
