There are roaches in New York that have survived the food chain and wimps they are not. These die hard roaches fight to live and are hard to kill or even control. A good defense against them is Boric acid powder dusting. You spread this stuff around and when they come out, it clings to their bodies sucks the moisture right out of them.
DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON
Curiously enough, they all die with their feet in the air. The mess is wall to wall dead roach which has to be swept up. Of course you have to have a regular "dusting" program to keep the little critters at bay. Or you can....
GET A LIZARD
Another popular method that comes with a catch (pun) is to keep a pet lizard. The gecko will hunt and eat these roaches until they are gone. It usually takes about 60 days to eat up an infested home depending. For really bad infestations, a pregnant female gecko is recommenced. The mother and the babies eat up a storm. If you notice the tail of the lizard getting thinner, it means it is losing weight which means the roaches are being depleted.
THE DOWNSIDE
The downside is the Lizard pellet poo which can smell and of course is found where you wouldn't want to find it. It is a trade-off of the lesser of the three evils...
WHICH ONE FOR YOU?
Periodic dusting and cleaning, Lizard poo or Roach problems....
