Working with seniors in South Orange County California is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a REALTOR®. Client's needs vary and it provides many unique opportunities to be of service. One of the most frequently asked questions from people thinking about moving into a 55 and better communities is, "Can I bring my pets?" Happily in most instances, the pets will be able to transition nicely into our 55 and better communities.
While pets are accepted, it is wise to consider the size of the pet that you are planning to move with you. Senior communities are better geared to small pets as the yards tend to be smaller (generally just patios or decks) and larger pets would require their owners to exercise them regularly.
When moving with pets, it's best to plan well in advance for the move to make it a happy event for you and your pet.
Begin with a trip to your veterinarian. Depending on the location of your new home, there may be additional vaccinations that would provide for your pets health. If you have pets that are not used to traveling, you might ask your vet for some medication that will lessen the stress for your pet. Before leaving, be sure to get a complete copy of your pet records and a recommendation for a vet in the area of your new home. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations on appropriate crates and carriers for your move. Get your pet acclimated to a crate or carrier as soon as possible.
Buy a new ID tag for your pet with your new address and cell phone number on it. That way if for some reason, you and your pet become separated during the move, you will be able to be contacted easily. It's also a good idea to take a photo of your pet and carry it with you as you travel.
Car travel is the most common way of making a move. Prepare in advance by getting your dog accustomed to a travel restraint. Cats typically do not travel well in cars so it's recommended that you purchase a well-ventilated carrier for their safety and yours. Never leave your pets unattended in a car when the weather is warm. The temperatures in the car can reach lethal proportions very quickly. Be sure to bring along food and water and appropriate dishes. It's also nice to bring along a few of your pet's favorite toys for the trip. Make frequent potty and exercise stops.
If you'll need to stay overnight at a hotel, arrange for hotels long in advance. Not all hotels are pet friendly, but the ones that are will make your stay so much more comfortable. Bringing along you pet's favorite bed will make the overnight stay feel more like home for your pet.
Prepare your new home for your pets. Be sure to bring along all the necessary items you'll need immediately when you settle into your new home: food and water bowls, food, water, medications, beds or bedding, and litter box. Anew toy is a great way to say welcome to their new home as well.
On moving day keeping your pet safe and secure while moving out and moving in is important. Placing your pet in a safe, quiet place like a bathroom is a good way to protect them and keep them from escaping or being under foot during your move. Post the door with a DO NOT ENTER sign. Let everyone helping with your move (friends and professionals) know that your pets are in that room and they should enter only with you. If you've purchased a crate for your pet, they may feel safer inside the crate if you've been able to acclimate them to the crate in advance.
Moving can be stressful for people and pets, but with some thoughtful preparation and the help of qualified professionals it can actually be a pleasant and fun experience. If you are considering a move to California, I'd be delighted to help you find you and your pet(s) a great home.
