stamp out Hunger food drivePaying It Forward:  National Stamp Out Hunger Day May 14 2011!

Did you know today is the LARGEST single day food drive in the country?  When you combine the nation's food banks with the power of the U.S. Postal Service's letter carriers, you've got QUITE the significant labor force for collecting food!

So here's your part:  BEFORE your mail pickup today, bag up some non-perishable food.  Place it by your mailbox.  Leave it there.  It's THAT simple!  Your letter carrier will collect the food, it gets combined with other donations and redistributed to LOCAL food banks, pantries, etc. to help your neighbors in need.  And there are LOTS of neighbors in need.

Things may look fine on the outside, but these tough times have hit hard in places you'd never expect.  So got a few cans of something you can spare?  Our bag is at the mailbox now, and even Sage the cat agreed to donate a can of her tuna fish!

A quote from our friend in North Carolina: "I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition. I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can. No more, no less." Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®

Great idea BLiz! The easier it is for someone to do something the more they will do it. Food collection right at your door step? Doesn't get any easier than that!

Judy, She protested a little about it being HER tuna, and she finally got the Big Picture and realized we'd just buy her more later!

I just received my postcard announcing this event recently and, as I do every year, I'll be placing some food items by my mailbox to do my part to stamp out hunger.

Craig, I think somehow I'd missed hearing about this in years past.  Active Rain helps show us opportunities!  Joni's post yesterday caught our eye!

Anita, It is a great chance to help out.

Joni, Thanks for the post yesterday so we found out about this!

It is worth participating and I did, but I wonder. How many days of hunger does this drive eradicate and for how many. The shame is that there are hungry people in America.

Tish, Certainly a great opportunity.   There's a few folks at my day job that regularly work at the area's biggest food bank sorting food.  Have helped out a few times over the year, interesting work :)

Scott, The local food bank told a story about a nice dressed woman pulling up in a BMW needing food....but one of those deals where a job had been lost, the car was leased and things had gotten tight REALLY fast.  Too many people are living paycheck to check....takes so little to know them down from thriving to barely surviving.

Maya, You're correct.  One day helps, but comes no where close to totally addressing the real issue.  It is a shame there have to be hungry people anywhere, we have so much.

I heard about this on the news. the bad thing is that many residence have cluster boxes. a small box, just big enough for some envelopes.

Greg, I think they were allowing bags at the base of the mailboxes.  Hopefully that helped!
