How pure our our intentions?Real estate is a competetive business. And all successful agents are self-motivated and are generally type “A” personalities.

As a result, most seek recognition in the form of both compensation and accolades, and it is not uncommon in the industry for agents to compete not only for business but also to attain certain levels of achievement that are officially delineated for recognition.

Awards of every size, shape and color are not uncommon objets d’ art in any real estate agent's office. Many compare production numbers with other agents on a regular basis to see where they stand.

Press releases are often submitted in an effort to “get noticed” primarily by potential customers, but also by peers.

Some may call it braggadocios, but it really is an attribute commonly associated with the sales personality.

However, we all know so well that when a declaration commences with: “I don’t want to brag but…”

The speaker WANTS to brag!

Yep, I will admit it. I want kudos and I am type A. I am lucky to work with a broker that doles out those kudos every day.

Richard, Good post. People may not mean to brag but they need to tell consumers why they should use the agent instead of someone else.

Richard, you think? LOL, we are all pretty much in the same catagory. Some just don't know how to do it with class like you do!

Good morning Richard,

You are right most agents are type "A" personalities and do want recognition and good compensation. Some are better at extolling their achievements in a quieter more refined "brag"!!

Good morning, Richard. Brag on. Some can do it with more class than others...

And others of us don't give a hoot about sales awards. They are more self-motivated and don't have egos the size of Montana.

I'm one of the few people who doesn't seem to care about accolades.  Many agents like to make note of being top producers, etc.  As long as I get paid, I'm fine sitting on the sidelines.

Richard....interesting, informative & introspective [for readers] post.  If you earn it--brag about it--can't hurt---won't change yourself.
Now, for those of us who don't have things to brag about or be recognized for--Make your own award--you got up and went out into that frenetic world, right?  You get the award.
For those who so do get recognized---great! go with it; continue growing; get more awards.

Have a great weekend.

There sometimes a fine line between bragging and promoting.  But for some the line is not so fine!

Richard,

Richard...if we don't pat ourselves on the back...who else will. Typically, I don't pat myself on the back but occasionally it does feel good!

Richard, I think awards are nice, who doesn't like a pat on the back? But contests make me crazy and should be illegal at brokerages. Clients should buy and sell homes on their own time frames, not as part of a scheme to get the winning agent an ipad.

Richard, Yes acknowledgement for hard work is always in order and can keep people on track for sure.  I agree with Leslie's #16 point about in house competition.  I have never understood how an inhouse competition is going to make my clients take action one way or the other to help my team win.

By the way,  Congratulations on your entering the elite group here at AR!
