Increase Your Google-Indexed Stuff: Add an Image Sitemap to Your WordPress Blog

By
Industry Observer

If you're running a WordPress blog as your real estate website, you're probably running a Plugin that tells Google (and others) about your site's sitemap: where to find the content.

Did you know that you can also tell Google specifically about images, too?

If you have a lot of images, and you've taken the time to name them according to what they are (burlington-heights-home-for-sale.jpg, etc.), getting them indexed will help boost your visibiity (and findability).

images sitemap plugin

Some things to note:

  • Google doesn't like images linked in from elsewhere - it only wants the images hosted on your own site.
  • It won't find images loaded into NextGen Gallery (NGG). I don't know why (yet). The developer for that plugin is working on sitemap code for NGG.
  • You may have to hand-edit the file to get rid of stuff it doesn't like when you try to upload it. That might seem scary but once you study the file for a few minutes, you'll see the pattern in the XML and will be able to delete the problem lines even if you have NO idea what you're doing - just look for the patterns.
  • When you have the file ready, you can upload it via your Google Webmaster Tools Account.

If you have an image-heavy site, this is well worth your time. If you don't have an image-heavy site, it might be time to add more to each blog posting, for that little extra kick.

Remember, if all of this seems overwhelming, you can increase your WP knowledge bit by bit over time. If you do that, one day you will know a LOT and will be way ahead of your local competition.

I loved your article.  Sometimes my brain shuts down when there are too many things that it doesn't understand, but I am going to keep going thru this and figure it out.  Thanks!

Thanks Mimi - there is WAY TOO MUCH TO KNOW! We are expected to be and do EVERYTHING! How can one person do this much? I am amazed by the agents out there who are juggling so many areas of expertise and still providing such good service to their clients.

With WP, like everything, poco a poco - little by little. Stuff that stumps you today will be a breeze tomorrow, or next year. I spent 10+ months hammering on the appraisal site I have, and the time frame for the same work on my own will be probably 10% of that, and a lot less late-night wine.  :-)

BTW, I really like your site!

Alison - Great reminder of how important it is to title your images for SEO.  And Google Webmaster Tools are way too much fun!

You're so right Rebekah - how many images do we have out there with useless names? I put up a lot of "house-front-1.jpg" files before getting a little (just a little!) wiser!

Wordpress is a wonderful thing. I have two websites with blogs that use Wordpress. I didn't know about the pictures. Thanks for pointing that out.

Serious question - can I name all of my pictures the same thing, or do they have to be different?  And Thank you!  I'm still tweeking it, but I really like how it is turning out . . .

Hi Mimi - name the something different, but related to the keywords for each blog post:

geneva-development-home-for-sale.jpg

geneva-subdivision-home.jpg

geneva-colorado-real-estate-listing.jpg

The main thing is - you need to make sure you know the 1 or 2 keywords you're going to use, first. And then you know what to name your photos!

What keyword tool do you use for research currently?

Hi Alan - glad you found something of use!

Hi Anthea - I'm going to try to put out a bunch of these little bit over the next few weeks and months. It took me way too long to learn this stuff and I really would like to help y'all shorten that learning curve!!!

Many of my images disappeared.  They are in the media library but I have years of posts with no images.  It is frustrating but I have not really taken time to figure out where they went.  It is on my to-do list.
