(Not So) Speechless Sunday - A Walk Through Old Town Alexandria, VA

A Walk Through Old Town Alexandria, VA

One of my favorite places around Washington, DC is Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia. As you walk through narrow streets of the city, under the trees forming shady tunnels, you feel as you stepped back in time. And you did.

Many townhomes go back to 18th century and are still used as private residences. Some of the historic townhomes accomodate restaurants and shops. As I was walking along Cameron Street, these pretty pink windows, enchanting store sign, and plants adorning the entrance attracted my attention. I love the way the splash of color makes this townhome stand out among the row of similar homes.

Hi Elizabeth - What an inviting photo! It's been quite a while since I visited there, but I remember enjoying exactly what you've described. That feeling of stepping back in time to a gentle, beautiful place is a delicious experience. Thanks for bringing that feeling back for me with your post.

Elizabeth - I love older, historic towns like Alexandria, Virginia. They have so much charm and beauty you could spend all day just strolling down the sidewalks enjoying the view. Love the photo - really captures the beauty of Alexandria. If I lived closer by, this would be a regular place I'd visit!

Hi Elizabeth, I've never been to Virginia..unless you count sitting on an amtrak train for an hour at one of the stops. This looks like just the kind of place I could spend a few hours getting lost it. Most inviting!

Judy - thank you for stopping by. Alexandria is a great town, full of history.

Belinda - the streets are pretty and the cobblestone makes it look like a city from long ago.

Kristine - Alexandria is one of my favorite places to visit. I'm there quite often, finding all sorts of errands there to give me a reason for visiting.

Will - perhaps you can put it on your list for the next time you visit.

Ann - it is easy to spend a day there walking around, stopping by antique stores and charming restaurants.

Rob - yes, it is a perfect place for a Sunday afternoon. Several restaurants have a vew of the Potomac River. It is fun to sit outside and look at the boats pass by.

Nice picture.

Having read and watched your posts daily I think you'd feel most at home either in Palo Alto, where Stanford U is located, or San Francisco.  Both are very walkable, lots of varied cultural events, great book stores, wonderful parks and gardens, and more.  San Francisco is prettier with its hills, architecture and being surrounded by water on three sides, but Palo Alto has better weather and is probably more family friendly.  That's my recommendation which I know has nothing to do with this post.

Lloyd - Palo Alto sounds like a perfect town for me, I just need to convince my kids and husband to make a move across the country. I would love to have great weather all the time, plus books stores, cultural events, and all other things you mentioned. And let's not forget all the vineyards. I may be calling you soon, looking for a house in Palo Alto.

Your photo of Alexandria reminded me of downtown Palo Alto without the brick sidewalks.
