Día del Maestro (Teacher's Day)
Teachers are very important in our lives and are honored in most countries.
Although International Teacher's Day is October 5th and the Pan-American conference established September 11th as Teacher's Day in Latin America, many of the countries have their own individual days to honor teachers.
Colombia and Mexico celebrate Teacher's Day today, May 15th.
Mexico picked this date in 1918 and has many large celebrations. The date also is important because it is the date of the capture of Queretaro.
Colombia picked this date in in 1950 when San Juan Bautista de la Salle was named the patron Saint of teachers. Juan Batista started the concept of free and universal education. Prior to and during his life (1651-1719) education was seldom available for most children.
