ALAMEDA WALKS, PART THREE

ALAMEDA WALKS, PART THREE  The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department sponsors ALAMEDA WALKS a program started in 2003.  The goal of the program was to get people out of their homes on Saturday mornings for a little exercise and a chance to learn a little about the City of Alameda.

Alameda Walks' third walk of the year is a walk on the Bay Trail and the Tidewater Aquatic Center and the East End on Saturday May 21  at 9 a.m.  The walk will start at the Lincoln Park Gates on High Street in Alameda.

Lincoln Park was dedicated in 1909 and is a very popular park in Alameda's East End.  Originally, it extended to San Leandro Bay but as the years went by some of the park lands were sold for development.  There are some beautiful oak trees on the park grounds which were part of the original site.  There is a monument to the Ohlone Native Americans who lived on the land.  At one time there was an Ohlone shell mound a few blocks west of the monument which was about 20 feet high.  There were Ohlone shells and implements in the mound.  Some of those implements are now at the Alameda Historical Museum.

The walk will then proceed along High Street to the East Bay Regional Park District Tidewater Aquatic Center on the Oakland side of the estuary over the High Street Bridge.  There will be a brief overview of the facility and the potential for walking, biking and picnicking around Martin Luther King Shoreline Park

The tour will return to Alameda walking along Fernside Avenue and back to Lincoln Park.

It's a great time of year to start taking walks and finding new trails! Looks like a beautiful area as well.

Torgie:

Thanks for your comment.  It is a beautiful area and it is a good time to start walking.  And the best thing about the walk is there is so much information from the leaders.  Its like learing about your community all over again.

The walk looks like fun and it's a good localism, Evelyn.  I need to do more of them myself.  Walks and Localisms.

Lloyd:

We just have a great program for walking in Alameda.  There is so much facinating information from the leaders you hardly notice the walk.  By the way, I met with both of the people you referred me to yesterday.  Thanks again for your help.
