A Study in Seismic Events

One of the joys of a hobby conducted in real time is that it allows for periodic updates.

My interest is in seismic activity of Utah - Yellowstone (the Intermountain Corridor).

In an area that experiences around 700 seismic events per year, we have just experienced a quiet week with a mere 26 events with none in the last 24 hours. These events appear evenly spread and low (micro) in intensity.

This week's "bumps" are only 50% of the previous week's activity.

A local news broadcast on Saturday, on an obviously slow news day, carried a story of fault lines (two) under the Great Salt Lake, and the challenge of flooding should either be the epicenter of any local earthquake activity.

By and large the report passed unnoticed by the local community.

I enjoy my hobby, despite its minute following.

Larry - WOW - it seems there are many "bumps" in your area each week.  I assume this type of nature's activity adds to the daily challenges of those living in the area.  I am finding more and more out about you and some of your hobbies - a man of many interests!

Barbara - we are part of a "living" planet, so the general population fail to notice any of the seismic activity. Even news items like I mentioned fail to produce any dialog. With or without my comment, the activity continues.  My hobby approach is to inform not alarm.

Larry.  Good thing you don't live in California.  You wouldn't be able to keep up with all the BUMPS

Larry, sounds like a great hobby, one that keeps you busy and out of trouble. Plenty of bumps to follow and analyze. How did you get interested in seismic activity?
