I'm lucky to live close to Washington, DC and be able to visit museums or monuments at any time I wish. Since this is Armed Forces Week, I have been visiting places in my area that honor the bravery of our men and women serving our country. I would like to share with you a couple of photos of the Air Force Memorial I took today.
The Air Force Memorial is located in Arlington, Virginia, overlooking the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and Washington, DC. This memorial honors the service and sacrifices of over 54,000 of Airmen who have died in combat.
The major part of the Memorial are three stainless steel spires, soaring skyward, with the highest reaching 270 feet above the ground. They express the precision of a "bomb burst" maneuver performed by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. The number three also represents core values of the US Air Force:
Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do.
The Air Force Memorial includes several parts, among them the bronze Honor Guard:
Other elements of the Memorial include an Air Force Heritage/Core Value inscription wall, a Courage/Sacrifice/Valor inscription wall, and the Missing Man Formation contemplation wall.
The Airman's Creed
I am an American Airman.
I am a Warrior.
I have answered my Nation's call.
I am an American Airman.
My mission is to Fly, Fight, and Win.
I am faithful to a Proud Heritage,
A Tradition of Honor,
And a Legacy of Valor.
I am an American Airman.
Guardian of Freedom and Justice,
My Nation's Sword and Shield,
Its Sentry and Avenger.
I defend my Country with my Life.
I am an American Airman.
Wingman, Leader, Warrior.
I will never leave an Airman behind,
I will never falter,
And I will not fail.
