Once again, the city of ALEXANDRIA VA hosts the Annual Memorial Day Jazz Fest. From 1pm until 7pm at Fort Ward Park, which is located at 4301 W Braddock Road.
As always, admission is free. (And if it rains, the festival will be held in the Lee Center Kauffman Auditorium at 1108 Jefferson Street).
There is both amphitheater and grass seating - and for your comfort, you are welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs as well as a picnic supper. Grills are even available for your use at the picnic sites. Of course, there will be a wide variety of food vendors on hand selling hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream and shaved ice, pizza, even fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Sorry, though, Fido must stay home and guard the alcoholic beverages, as neither are allowed.
So, who is on hand this year, performance-wise?
The Tom Cunningham Orchestra will be on stage with their big band swing music and vocals.
The Bruce Swaim Quartet features mainstream jazz standards as well as their own originals.
The Lovejoy Group will be on stage with their energetic jazz, funky flues and smooth Latin rhythms.
Al Williams is a local Wammie Award winner for 2008 Best Jazz Recording of the Year.
The Village Jazz Band features Dixieland jazz and New Orleans style music.
Parking will be available on both sides of West Braddock Rd. Additional parking is available at the Minnie Howard School, 3801 West Braddock Rd.
There is also plenty of public transportation. Fort Ward Park is served by DASH and Metrobus transit lines. For DASH route and schedule information, call 703.370.DASH or visit www.Dashbus.com. For Metrobus schedule information, call 202.637.7000 or visit www.wmata.com.
So, come join the fun on Monday, May 30 at Jazz Fest and swing on in to summer....
