I was very reluctant to write on this very controversial subject so bear with me in writing an opinionated (for BOTH sides) post regarding the Hawaii Superferry.  There are two sides to every story just as there are two sides to this one and it will be a debatable subject no matter how it is discussed because of the views and opinions by different environmental groups and Hawaii residents.

The Hawaii Superferry had launched on August 26, 2007 but the Superferry was stopped the next day by Maui Circuit Court Judge Joseph Cardoza until he rules whether the Superferry can still operate while a environmental assessment is being done. On Kauai the service was stopped indefinitely because of safety concerns from the anti ferry protests.

Ah! The Pro's and Con's of a decision that could affect our environment, upset or kill the endangered humpback whale in Hawaii and cause more heartache than it may be worth. On the other hand it could bring in more revenue for our state, make an alternate method of transportation for not only the tourists but for residents who need to commute to other islands for business as well.

Let's first look at the Negative impact it may have on traveling from island to island:

  • Traffic concerns for the islands that the Superferry is traveling to. Additional traffic created by the Superferry around the areas in each harbor would be extensive.
  • The spread of invasive species No vehicle inspection or removal procedures were in place for plants, coqui frogs or other invasive species trying to hitch rides from island to island on the vehicles being transported by the Superferry.
  • Potential collisions with humpback whales The Superferry needs to operate at 37 knots (43 mph) and marine mammal experts say 15 knots to reduce the risk of injury to whales if they are hit.
  • Negative Impact on Emotions created with the residents of the islands because there was no environmental assessment done before the Superferry arrived. (this has been in planning for SIX years)

The Positive impact the Superferry may have for our islands:

  • After the September 11th terrorist attack it was evident that our Hawaiian islands were dependent on air flight and needed an alternative to transportation from island to island
  • Great alternative to those who do not like to fly in airplanes and would like their car to travel with them
  • For Hawaii residents who commute from island to island for business while in the comfort of their own automobiles while riding around or maybe just an overnight trip.
  • Hawaii Residents who want to go fishing off other islands and take their boats with them or go camping (and take their gear with them)
  • Additional Revenue and jobs for Hawaii's residents.

And I could go on and on for both sides here but the bottom lines here are that there is a Decision Expected Today on Hawaii Superferry by the Maui Court to see if the Hawaii Superferry can operate while an Environmental Assessment is done  and the Hawaii Superferry Warns It Must Sail Soon - October 5, 2007 because it is losing $650,000 per week while it sits in Honolulu Harbor.

Though I am not a "seasoned" environmentalist I do know one thing. It has divided the residents of all islands with their views and emotional outbursts against other human beings. Yes, they are fighting for what they believe is right. That's fine. But to be rude, violent and disruptive is not the Aloha Spirit. It is saddening to see that this whole subject resorted to this behavior (regardless what everyone's opinion was) as described in USA Today article Surfer's Block Hawaii Superferry. I do commend the Hawaii Superferry for stepping back and allowing the "process" to determine the fate/success of the Hawaii Superferry.

This is my only opinion on this whole scenario. The human error in letting negative angry emotions get in the way of individual opinions and views.

At first glance, it seems like a great idea.  It's got to be less environmentally harmful than air planes.  Just keep the pilot sober.  We had a ferry tip over with a drunken captain.

If this doesn't get approved, perhaps the Humpbacked Whales could be harnessed and trained to provide rides from island to island.

Sally, I remember when I lived there 20 yrs ago the discussion of a airboat that floated above the water, a hydroboat of some sort and the concern of the whales in the area. Is this ferry the same one they were debating then? I can't remember the exact name now...

Lenn:  I wonder how fast the ships that carry supplies over to those islands go....I should have researched that too. I watched a show on tv about a ferry captain who was at fault. I think it was in Greece or something ...in any case there will be pros and cons in our every day life here.

Lysa: Nope...and we do have a ferry going from Ewa to Aloha Tower now operating. (doesn't save time at all either!) And...thought this pic looked happy...hehe.

As someone who saw two blue whales on our local shores this summer as a result of getting hit by big liners, I am against anything that can harm these beautiful animals.

Lysa: Thanks kind lady!

Mana: It will still be a debatable subject. We have big liners toting supplies to all the islands....but the ferry has to travel at a high rate of speed.

Sally - I can see why it's causing such division. Bith sides have valid points. I'll be curious to see how it shakes out.

I can't believe they let people invest all the money into this venture, and then stopped it. And it disgusts me that every time there's a controversial subject, instead of sticking to the subject, people resort to bad behavior. Are we civilized or not?

Sally Jo, would the ferry deliver me to the place that you have those cool seals so that I can pet them? :)

Lisa: That's what I was thinking in the beginning....then it's a "state approves" but no one else agrees so I suppose they waited until it launched to protest. Why? And the bad behavior is what I am concerned about.

Laurie: No petting!

Wow it was put in place without environmental studies.... as careful as Hawaii is that really surprises me.  If I want to come visit I can not bring Max - because of rabies - it is my understanding Hawaii has never had a case of them.... just one of the ways Hawaii tries to keep the environment safe.

Sally, good job on neutralizing your stance on this very controversial, yet important subject!  The emotions are really flying here on the islands.  It'll be very interesting to hear about the outcome!

Sally....first: The new picture really shows your "sunny" side...love it! The logo is adorable...Margaret did a wonderful job.

Perhaps the different impact and focus groups should get in touch with the people running the ferry service between Nova Scotia and Maine....similar scenarios!

Sally, first let me say that you did a good job on trying to stay neutral, but second I would like to ask a question. What is the basis for believing that this Superferry's are going to be having collisions with the whales?  Has this been a problem in the past or are they just assuming that because they are so fast they these collisions will be taking place?  If this has not been a problem than I think that it is unreasonable to just assume that this will happen without having an incident to point to.  But if it has happen in the past by other boats, then those that allowed this project to reach this point, should be responsible for reimbursing the owners of the Superferry if this project is stopped.

Lisa: Nothing to do but keep a neutral stance. Since you're on Maui let us know any updates....thanks!

Joan: Thanks...different time, place and circumstances I think.

Carole: Me too!

George: I believe they are being proactive for the whale route....although they are wanting the Superferry to go a different route not just during whale season but always....click on the links in the story for more info.

Hey Sally, It is sad that it has divided the residents and I like how you showed both sides to the scenario.  For every positive there is a negative...sometimes we just have to get along to find out which one has the most.  With an open mind of course.  :)

Sally, Great post. In West Palm Beach we used to have a ferry like the one you have. It would run from the Port to the Bahamas.  It had so many problems that it would leave people stranded in the Bahamas.

Sally - I thought shutting down a small wind generator while they decide its fate was bad. Imagine the costs involved in creating this puppy only to have it shut down after one day of service. Keep us updated on "progress!"

Sally- You did  a great job showing both sides without taking sides. I can see both sides. I have been following this story with the Star Bulletin. When I lived in Washington I used to take the ferry to Bremerton and Victoria. It was such a cool trip. My kids loved it. There are a lot of Blue whales, humpbacks and Beluga whales there in the sound and around.  I never heard of the whales getting hurt. And there they are very good caretakers of the whales. I think it would be great to go to another island with your own car. Katerina

Paula: That's the thing that bothered me as well.  Thanks.

Matt: Well, after only one day not much to hear about anything wrong with it...more wrong with the way things were handled from the beginning to present.

Mary: The figures keep changing....for just the weekly loss costs for NOT running it...800k on the news last night.

Katerina: This is starting to turn into a circus with the ruling this morning...will keep you all posted.

Robert: I hope so.

This is quite disappointing.  The islands very much need this service.  We ship cars back and forth now with the barge.  It just costs so much and takes so long that most avoid it except for permanent moves.  There are also people with medical issues that can not fly.  They have no safe way to travel between the islands.  I can list about 50 other benefits of the ferry for small business and our local citizens.

On a civil defense note, if we have another natural disaster hit one of the islands it is a fast way to get needed resources over to aid them.

I have heard both sides too.  What bothers me the most is that Matson and other ships can run free without protest, but certain locals just have trouble with anything new like the Superferry.  Stats show that a majority of Hawaii prefers it.  Interesting to see what happens.  I feel bad for those that lost jobs.

There is more to this issue than invasive elements and whales getting hurt.  Could this is really be about how much business can be taken away from the traditional airlines and rental companies?  I just want to know who's giving the money to put up the fight????

Rob:  Did you hear something other than what we did?  At this point it is only assumptions on our part. Who knows...we may never know the "real" reasons. In any case, I am more concerned with how it is being handled....it shows a lot about our "aloha" state. Now it's all over the news all over the world. Sad.

Just do the math on it.  If the Superferry was allowed to run who would they financially hurt the most?  The airlines and rental car companies (maybe it's just a conspiracy theory).  They are afraid the ferry is going to run into whales???  The last time I checked there were boats interweaving the Hawaiian islands left and right.  I also think the ferry would be willing to slow down their speeds to an acceptable "whale safe" level.  The other argument of introducing non-native elements to the other islands seems awful strange to me.  Tourists, Airplanes, and Boats are continually traveling between our islands non-stop.  Why wouldn't they be able to transport these awful non-native elements that they are all afraid of???

This Superferry could have been battled before the ferry was delivered to Oahu.  Why was it not oppossed earlier (did people just not care)?  Well, I think one distinct advantage to the Superferry opposition is the fact that the Superferry is here ramped up and incurring costs at full speed.  What better way to bankrupt a company than to wait until it starts ramping up employment costs and operating costs.  Once that happens spring the legal debate and stretch it out until the Superferry goes broke.  This is not an environmental issues (in my opinion).  The environment is a smoke screen (in my opinion).  I think there is something else driving this whole opposition and I'm betting that it relates to money... just like most everything else.

Rob:  You voice your opinion well...:)  I think I want to not give a wholehearted opinion because of the politics involved. It is such a mess and yes, I have contemplated all those same questions. Bottom line...I'll never know what's driving this whole mess until "they" decide to be honest with their reasons. Until then, it's speculation, individual opinions and not fact. I say bring everything out into the open and then let the people decide. Yeah, right.

The Superferry was opposed before it came.  Our Governor exempted it from having to do an Environmental Impact Study.  An environmental group went to the Supreme court and it took until about a month ago for the Supreme court to come up with it's ruling.  In the meantime, the ferry had been built and delivered to the islands.  The Supreme Court ruled that the Superferry absolutely did need to do and EIS.  Many residents on the neighbor islands do not want the Superferry, as Sally said for many reasons.  I thought it was a pretty good example of what is to come when the first trip to Maui brought 3 empty pickup  trucks from Oahu, the owners of these trucks proceeded to fill all the trucks with rock from our Maui beaches  to take back to Oahu. Thank goodness they stopped service of the Superferry and found the trucks loaded with Maui rocks.  The neighbor islands have resources  that stand to be pillaged.   I  won't be riding the Superferry.

Hi Karen! Yeah....some people really have strong opinions. I chose not to especially when it got violent on Kauai. (there was no reason for that!) That was bad. In the end it cost the state more money and we're paying for all of this anyway....all of us...through our tax dollars. I hope everyone realizes there was a better solution. There is always a solution and a positive outcome.
