The loss of our Fourth Estate concerns me so I was pleased to see that I am not the only one who is concerned. Eli Pariser gives an excellent explanation of why we need to be aware of what we are seeing on the internet. It may not be what you think it is.

Why SEO May Not Be Working For You.

We blog to share our thoughts. We apply SEO techniques to get our thoughts noticed by search engines. We then expect the search engines to deliver our blog content to everyone searching our carefully crafted keywords.

But is this how it works? Apparently not, according  to Eli Pariser.

In his new book, “The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding from You,” Eli exposes how search engine algorithms may give two users different results, even though they’re searching with the same keywords.

In this video, Eli gives a brief overview of his research and his conclusions.

It's still worthwhile controlling whatever you can as far as your SEO and marketing goes.

Think of SEO as you think of your signage.  Good ON-page SEO is like the sign in front of your listing - it will build good signals for the search engines.  Good OFF-page SEO, like the directional signs to your "open house" or web page, will place more signals where the search engines can allocate your credibility and reputation. Be sure you are using links with good anchor text (your keywords) wherever you can.

Be aware that your Facebook status updates may not be as visible as you think. They can be filtered depending on your friends' interests and their interactions with you.

I think it is interesting that Bill took the approach of being heard over the internet rather than what you are able to hear over the internet because of filtering.  What I got out of seeing the video of the  TED Talk last week elsewhere was more about hearing and less about being heard.

I've known for a long time what I see is different than what others see...  on Google, Facebook etc.  A semi  recent change on Facebook made it worse... and I have always struggled with FB.

I think for trivial things like real estate blogging filter bubbles make it different. I think we can still manipulate being heard.   I think for real world issues filter bubbles are a lot more important but if people only care about being heard, they probably don't care that much about hearing divergent viewpoints and what is happening outside their own backyard.
