The struggles of, owning your own business.

Most people have a misconception of what a CEO or owner’s job is really like.  Hollywood shows us that CEO’s typically sit around all day and play golf, but what Hollywood does not show us is all of the work that goes into making a company what it is, and keeping the company alive and growing.  We don’t see the small and medium size businesses and what the owner’s go through on a day to day basis.  We also don’t see all of the structuring and organizing that is required of a much bigger business.  The fact is that most CEO’s did not start their company to become a CEO, they started their company because they love that particular field and enjoy doing work in the field, not sitting behind a desk all day.
Probably the most important job of any business owner or CEO is to structure and organize their business.  On the lower levels of the business world this is even more time consuming.  Owners of a small to medium sized business are expected to know how to do every job within their company.  This is important for several reasons, the most important reason however is to make sure that every person in the company is performing their job according to standard.  It is also important for the owner’s to know how to do every job within the business in case a member of their staff is unable to perform certain duties on a given day.  The business owner has what you would call a “vested interest in the company.”  If the business does well, then the owner does well, but if the business does not do well, the owner will suffer also.  In order to make sure that the business continues to succeed, the owner may need to do work in the lower levels of their company from time to time.
When the owners of small to medium sized businesses have to work in the lower levels of the company it allows them to have more of an interaction with their clients, which tends to have a very positive impact on the company.  Even though this interaction takes away from the owner’s ability to structure and organize the company, it allows them to get a firsthand account of how satisfied the clients are with the company, as well as areas that may need improvement.
On top of worrying about the organization and structure of their company, as well as trying to help out with the actual functionality of the company, another very important job of a company owner at any level is the marketing and promotions of the company.  No company starts off as a global brand, and few companies can maintain that status once they get it without proper marketing and promotion of the company.  This is one of the most essential jobs that a company owner has, and one of the reasons that a lot of great companies never get recognized for the truly great services or products that they provide.
The struggles of creating and growing a brand are no simple task and require a lot of dedication and commitment in order to succeed.  As long as a business owner can maintain that passion that they used to create the company though, they can enjoy seeing their company grow and flourish.  If an owner or a CEO of a company can find the time to get out for an evening of golf, then they deserve it, after all, it was their vision and determination that caused the company to grow into what it is today.

Now, how about owning the company and operating the company and having to wear many hats for the company?  It is a lot of work and there is always some thing to do.
