(not so) Wordless Wednesday...

I remember the first time I saw the Mackinac Bridge bride, I was standing on the fan tail of the ferry with my dad on one of our family get-together's in the Yooper. I marveled at the insect sized workmen scurrying over the steel super-structure like ants devouring a PB&J sandwich. Full of child-like wonderment, I pondered in my minds eye what the yet unfinished suspension span would look like when done.

That was the last time I saw the bridge. In the early 90's, I made my first of 9 white-knuckled trips across the bridge on my '84 Gold Wing. White-knuckled, because there was only one time that the wind was below 25 knots. The trips were quite an adrenaline rush, even for an experienced rider. But then, 4 fingers of Jack, will give most folks enough liquid courage to do just about anything...

My brother is a cancer survivor and every year for the last 10 or so he and his wife walk that bridge over Labor Day; it's quite the event!

Somehow that bridge looks different after reading your story. Perhaps I'll have to have a second look this evening after sipping a few fingers of scotch. Enjoy the day!

Michael, I am up and over that span at least every other year. Last year we were there in July, enroute to our "Yooper" campground. It is quite the span.

This photo is a real winner and I had to look up this bridge. Here is a tidbit of information for you.

"The bridge celebrated its 150 millionth vehicle crossing on September 6, 2009!"

That is quite a lot of crossings!

As a kid, I was terrified of big bridges like this, and car washes, OK that was random, but true!

Michael, we have crossed this bridge many times, and you feel sooo high up in the middle... I remember the sides seeming to be soo low, and winds blowing...

thanks for the memories brought back.

I don't know my friend. But 4 fingers of Jack and I'm not so sure I'd even get on the bike, let alone ride across that bridge!

I do however love the way you used the tree branch to frame part of the picture. Sort of the man vs. nature thing.

You are truly talented!

Your story about the Mackinac Bridge gave me a rush! I've heard so many good stories about it, but none as good as yours! I love the photo too!

Hi Michael,

I have visited relatives in Michigan and crossed it many times.  My grandmother took great pride in walking the bridge each year.  It is one of my earliest memories of her.  Great photo and thanks for the memories/nostalgia flash.
