Want to get your post Featured? Just steal someone's content!

By

Writing post after post and never getting featured?  Discouraged that the same bloggers are always getting featured?  Want to get your post featured?  Just steal someone's content!  That seems to be the growing trend on ActiveRain for making it to the feature board.

Over the last few weeks I've come across a few posts that were featured on ActiveRain that were plagiarized.  They were NOT the bloggers' original content and they content was copied and pasted verbatim from the original author.  If you find a good article that you want to share, share it but do NOT plagiarize it and pass it off as your own content.  At the very least have enough common sense to change it up a bit, add a few words, switch the paragraphs around!  ADD ORIGINAL CONTENTYOUR ORIGINAL CONTENT!  Don't just copy and paste it, play it off as your own and then be proud of yourself when you see the little yellow star!!!   You should be ashamed!  When I want to share someone's content that's not on ActiveRain where I can just re-blog it, I tweet it or share it through Facebook.  If an outside website allows for "re-blogging", you must follow the instructions given and/or give credit to the original author.

You see that little box that pops up right before you publish your post?  The one that asks you to please confirm that this entry does NOT contain copyrighted material that you don't have permission to reprintDoes it look familiar?

Posting plagarism

Do you see that line with the check box, yeah the one right above that specifically states:  This is not my content but I have permission to repost it. Did you check the box?  No, of course you didn't because by checking that box, you will not be awarded any points and it's all about the points, isn't it???

activerain does not award posts for plagarism

Did you think those final two warnings before hitting publish weren't meant for you?  NEWSFLASHThey were meant exactly for you

Hooray for you, you beat the point system! You beat out all the members of the ActiveRain Community who put a lot of time and effort into creating their own content.  You copied someone else's content and you FINALLY got your feature post....

Activerain featured post with no pointsFor those of you who don't know, when you see these symbols on a featured post, it means the writer may have gotten featured but it was later revealed it was copyrighted material and not his/her own content although still on the feature board (which I don't agree with); still able to be re-blogged (which I don't agree with because you are now reblogging plagiarized content) the points were retracted.

You want to get your post featured?  I'm sure you do but stealing someone else's original content is NOT the answer!

Gina, how can you be proud of something you did not do? I don't get it. I was features twice, and was amazed, pleased and surprised, not necessarily in that order.

Kathy, I don't understand how people can take someone else's content verbatim and pass it off as their own!  I only have a few features myself and I felt the same as you...

It's not new, Gina. I remember posting about it 2 and 3 years back--and it has been happening before and since too.

They took away the 'flag' function where we could flag the posts as plagarized, too, when they changed to 'suggest' button.

Gotta copy the URL and contact AR  with feedback to get it to them . . .

Candice, I did contact them and I sent them the link to the original content.  They redacted the points but as you know its not about that - its about what's right and what's wrong.  Not to mention others reblogging the post without even realizing the points have been redacted - they are not reblogging someone else's content without permission.

It should be an immediate removal from the feature board and quite frankly an immediate time out from AR for 30 days...IMO.

Cindy, you are 100% correct.  It should be removed from the feature board AND either a time out or point reduction (not the same as taking away the points from the plagarized post but taking an additional points away).

Well, Gina, if it is any comfort, I "Suggested" THIS post for a Feature.

I have a hunch YOU wrote it.

John, Unfortunately, there's many who just copy and paste and pass it off as their own.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Wouldn't you think that whoever bestows the magic star would give enough consideration to the post to see that it's not original content?  It's really not that difficult to spot.  It's even easier to check with a total time commitment of about a minute or two.

Gina, I am just as frustrated with this as you are.  Copyright Infringement is not a joke and we've had members sued for doing so.  We have a very small group of moderators who feature posts and once in awhile a plagiarized post falls through the cracks and gets featured.  It's not right and its something we need to be extra careful of.  It also, should never remain featured once we are aware of the wrong and I apologize for that.

Thank you again for this kick in the pants to make AR fabulous!

Gina, thanks for your insight and notification on this.  I did re-blog a post in question without prior knowledge of it being plagarized.  I hardly re-blog, but when the content is informative and I think my readers would benefit, then I  will reblog.

Next time I will do my due-diligence before hitting that button again.  Man I feel like I was an unknowing accomplice to a crime.  Darn It!!

Great post, mine was a little more directed at the offender, while your addresses the entire problem as a whole.  Perhaps if we "FLAME" the offenders publically and post links to the original and fraudulent posts we can bring enough attention to shame these people into no longer engaging in this practice.

Gina:  Well, it happens all the time. Now with 2 notices, I'm not sure how folks can say they didn't know. You know I had a loan officer email me thru AR & he asked permission to use my posts 'with a little changes'.  I told him no, straight out.  You can bet I will find them sometime down the road with Copyscape.

Hey Gina, I am new to ActiveRain and your blog was re-blogged by Leilani Bob & Leilani Souza (Placer County, CA), and I am so glad that it was re-blogged because I might never have come across your blog on this topic.

Anyway, as I said, I am new, I have not become an official member, but I am seriously considering it. I would never consider copying somebody elses material, and it is good that you bring this to the attention of the members because it is highly unprofessional...and if you notice that I am doing anything wrong, please let me know. I am still an ActiveRain "newbie" learning the ropes.

Thanks Jeanne.

Mike, I agree and Kerrie from AR has also commented below your comment and addresses the issue.

Kerrie, thank you.  We are all human and unfortunately things sometimes fall through the cracks.  I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my post and for AR have a no tolerance policy once its brought to their attention.

MeLisa, I hear ya.  We could really be opening up an entire can of worms by reblogging plagarized content.  BTW if read Ralph's (comment #16) post.  You can still reblog the original writer's content as long as you follow the rules listed.  Again, I mean the original writer.
