Long Island New York | Lighthouse Adventures on Long Island

Long Island's lighthouses offer long views that tower above our coastline.

Passing ships use these historic beacons to navigate, and tourists can climb the winding steps to scenic panoramas.

According to local experts, Suffolk County Long Island has more lighthouses than any other county in the United States.

You can climb the winding steps of the historic lighthouse at Montauk Point, which was completed in 1796 at the request of President George Washington and it is the oldest lighthouse on Long Island and in New York State.  You can a visit structure in Southhold, and by boat you can visit one in Huntington Harbor.

The Fire Island Lighthouse which was opened in 1826 is now automated and has tours available from April through mid-December.

Organizations such as East End Lighthouses and Long Island Lighthouse Safaris offer cruises and excursions to visiting these wonderful structures.

For more information on Long Island Lighthouses, you can contact East End Lighthouses at 631-406-6180 email:info@eastendlighthouses.org

Visiting Long Island many offshore lighthouses is both enjoyable and educational.

I just love lightouses, and I remember visiting the Montauk Lighthouse as a kid. Lighthouses have such a romantic appeal although the lighthouse tenders probably wouldn't agree with that.

Great informational post about the area, Larry/Sheila.

Larry & Sheila - I have been to Long Island several times and love it.  I think anything to do with lighthouses is interesting and there seems to be a certain mystic about them.  This is a good read!

Larry & Sheila, when I think of the East Coast, besides the fun cities, I think of lighthouses, LOTS of them.

Larry and Sheila,

Lighthouses are a symbol of a haven and safety.  They are beautiful and a special reminder of days gone by.  I love that so many people are restoring them.  All the best, A

We have two lighthouses here, an old historic non-working one and a working one. I'd love to visit the working one but it's off limits.

Hi,

Did the creep from yesterday ever call and explain?

I like lighthouses also. The closest is in Santa Cruz, about 25 miles from here.  They converted the old house next to the lighthouse into a "surf museum" with historic surfer photo, boards, etc.
