5 minutes of Classics per Week. Rachmaninoff.

Welcome to my classical music series. Tonight I am going to the Classical music concert to The Woodlands Cynthia Woods Mitchel Pavilion. One part of this concert will be the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This piece is ranking #1  among classical music lovers according to the Classic FM British radio station survey.

Sergei Rachmaninoff was born in Russia in 1873, he started playing piano at the age of 5, and by the age of 18 had become pretty famous as a pianist and later as a composer and conductor. Right after October Revolution in 1917 his family left Soviet Union. He  lived in Europe for about a year and than immigrated to the United States. During WWII he played several charity concerts here in the USA and all funds that he made he transferred to Russian Ministry of Defense in support of Soviet Army in their fight with German Nazis'. Rachmaninoff died in 1943 in Beverly Hills from Melanoma.

Please enjoy his Piano Concerto No2

I just started this series of blogs on Classical music. In my previous blog you will find magnificent piece by Frederich Chopin.

Anna - Interesting to read about Rachmaninoff's life.  I didn't realize he lived in America all those years.  Thank you for another great musical interlude.

Hi Anna,

I love this series that you started about the Classics.  I enjoy the history as well as the magnificent music...  I am looking forward to this each week.  You should also do a weekly series on the great Art Master's.  I would enjoy that as well!!!  Thanks again Anna this is wonderful!

Anna- I took piano lessons for about 12 years and even though I studied the greats, I'd forgotten it all. Thanks for the quick lesson.  Can't wait for more.

Anna,

It is a great series, enjoyed the Piano Concerto #2. the one I love the most is his Piano Concerto # 3. Interestingly you hear some melodical similarity in them, he extended some of the tunes to his Concerto #3

Jon, thank you.I agree Concerto No3 is a great piece too. I think what you hear is like signature part or style of Rachmaninoff. This is the way we recognize other composers by those nuances in their music. I am glad you enjoy mu series.
