Come visit San Diego!

So how much was the bribe?

Balboa Park, San Diego, CaliforniaU.S. News & World Report recently published its latest rankings of the Top 21 best vacation spots in the United States. Top 21? Why an odd number like that?

Anyway, San Diego came in at #3, behind San Francisco and Washington, D.C. I've been to San Francisco but not to D.C. I'm sure it's nice, but San Diego calls itself America's Finest City, so all I want to know is how much was the bribe that San Franciso and D.C. paid to get ranked above San Diego?

I've been to #2, 3 (one of my all-time favorites), 4, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18 and 21. The less exotic areas for the most part Jim. I was also wondering why southern Utah failed to make the list, it's an amazing place to play!

Good post Jim-- I've been to 16 of them... missing a few out of the country... but have hit most of the domestic places!

Hi Jim, I live in San Francisco. I have no problems with the ranking! I remember when I first moved here in 1987, one of the two local papers at the time, plus the affiliated TV station, had a slogan: San Francisco, The Best Place on Earth! It works for me, because it is not only the physical surroundings, but the feeling I get and the people that live here.

I love San Diego, so much to do, but still so laid back, if I had to leave Orange County, San Diego would be my spot

I have only been to 8 and need to travel much more! 21 seems like an odd number - someone did get a boost (or lucky)!

1,2,3,4,6,7,9,11,12,14,17,18,19,20  I can understand why any one of the three could be #1.  I like to suggest fun posts - they're a break from the "same old same old"  This should get a lot of action

Let's see, I've been to 11 of them, but not San Diego.  Congrats on making so high on the list, #3 is pretty impressive!

Of course depends on what you like when you travel?  Some like the heart of a city, others the ocean or mountains.  I'm a bit surprised there is nowhere on the list from places in Colorado and Arizona.

I have been to 12 of them.  I used to live in Bethesda, close to DC.  There is a lot to see and do there.  But nothing beats sitting on the terrace at the Hotel Del watching the sunset and drinking a lovely cocktail!

I'm sure you have this list wrong.  Where the heck is Colorado????  Really???  The Rocky Mountains did not win over Las Vegas.  Hmmm.  Guess we didn't offer a high enough bribe.

I've been to all except #16.  I'd pick San Diego over DC but then I might lose my DC citizenship having been born in the city :-)

I've been to all but Disneyworld and Puerto Rico. I guess it depends on what you are looking for on your vacation. The historic sites and Smithsonian collection in DC are unique but the beaches around San Diego are more conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Jim,

I have been to 16 of them.  I wonder what kind of criteria they use in ranking cities.  I think San Diego is one of the California gems. A

When you visit the Washington, DC area, you might agree with the status as an outstanding destination for tourists.  Now is a good time to plan that trip!

Interesting post Jim. I've been to most of those listed. I've not been to the National Parks, Virgin Islands, Savannah, or Miami. Wow, my city is only 21, got to get the Convention and Visitors Association on the stick. Tourism is big business down here.
