Heavy Goods Vehicles from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation have begun removing contaminated soil next to the Clermont Condominiums at the foot of Main Street.
The earth at the site saturated with coal tar and other dangerous byproducts that are known to cause cancer was caused by burning coal and petroleum to heat and light the homes and businesses of Nyack between 1852 until 1965.
This noisy, dirty removal will no doubt take months and cause a lot of discomfort for local residents, but the rewards will be a wonderful new waterfront development that will be a boon to the neighborhood.
Details are available at the DEC website.
