Pre-viewing homes for sale in the Tampa Bay area has always been a tool I use often. My niche includes clients that are inspectors, snow birds, and just anyone who doesn't have to the time to look at 20 homes over a month. After finding a list of homes within my buyer's criteria, I designate a day to view these homes and cross out the ones that are not within their liking. Very recently, I pre-viewed some homes in Tampa, particularly around the Sulphur Springs area and I had a scare of my life. I really thought to myself, that maybe I shouldn’t do this alone.
I visited a number of blighted homes that day, many with no electricity and some in not so good neighborhoods. There was this one home that was boarded. The outside was a bit unkept, with the cobblestone driveway coming loose. There was no electricity in the home, so I had my handy-dandy flash light to help navigate from room to room. Then as I entered the master bath, I noticed a red substance on the floor. Shining my light towards the ceiling, there was more red splatter on the wall. I freaked out and ran out of that house as soon as possible. I called the listing agent and share with her my experience. "It's paint splatter", she said. Paint Splatter, I chuckled. That was the most furtherst thought from my mind. But I carried on to the next house on my list.
As a REALTOR, I understand our jobs can be scary sometimes. I always announce myself when I walk into an empty home. It may not do anything if someone was there, but it makes me feel better. It's my way of letting that person know, I mean no harm and maybe in return they will announce themselves as well. I don't carry pepper spray or a Taser, but I have considered having some sort of protection. Ever since this incident, I am considering bringing along a friend on these viewing. Strength is in numbers, together, I feel the experience can be a much safer and sound one. I am open to comments or suggestions from you, as to how to be safe while working.
